Lola by The Kinks is definitely on the list.
this one is…not bad for being >50 years old, all things considered
but cis people better not be covering it in 2024

i mentioned to someone a few weeks ago that it would be cool if a trans comedian or musician was able to claim Monty Python’s lumberjack song as affirming instead of mocking
but damn, now i want to do a whole album of stuff like that
yeah, dang, the more i think about it, the more i realize there really were quite a lot of gender-y songs that made a strong impression on me in my younger years.
some of them, of course, are a bit problematic 😐
i also didn’t realize it was a cover song for like ten years after i first heard it, lmao
i thought it was so cool that a girl called their boyfriend “buttercup.” between that and my long-held appreciation for any songs with gender-subversive lyrics, i suppose this qualifies as a #ThereWereNoSigns situation 😂
when i finally heard the original it was like ok that does make more sense, but i love the song just the same anyway
i really like when people cover songs originally sung by someone of a different gender, but don’t change the gender/pronouns of the people in the song. but the flip side of this is that one of my favorite gender-swapped covers is build me up buttercup.
the singer has changed to a woman, and the lyrics *have* changed so the song is still straight, but now it’s a song about a fuckboy named buttercup
🥹 beautiful
