Reminder that whatever you store on an internet site will one day vanish, even if it's stored on the largest and richest site in the world:
"Myspace, the once mighty social network, has lost every single piece of content uploaded to its site before 2016, including millions of songs, photos and videos with no other home on the internet."
I wonder if it is to do with the structure, that this is normal behaviour on here?
With centralised competitive platforms they grow by essentially destroying each other.
With federated open platforms on the Fediverse, they grow by helping each other.
When Mastodon recently gained millions of new users, that also greatly helped other Fediverse platforms, because each new Mastodon user was a potential person to interact with on the other platforms too.
For example PeerTube accounts started getting more followers and viewers because PeerTube accounts can be followed and interacted with from Mastodon.
Seeing certain business people who have just joined the Fedi posting that Venure Capital and algorithms etc are "inevitable" on the Fediverse, and that we should embrace them, because they are somehow innately better than volunteers or small non-profits etc.
If for-profits are innately better, why are they here? Why did they come to a volunteer-built network?
Truth is this: VC firms are shallow vampires trying to exploit trends by making everything for-profit.
Media people, start your own Fediverse servers! This is your chance to be in control of what you publish!
By remaining on Twitter you are helping Musk control you and your readers. You used to be in control before Twitter. The Fediverse is your chance to get back that control before it is too late.
It is really cheap and easy, even non-technical people can do it, it starts from about $8 a month:
Qoto.org says it has zero tolerance for hatred, but also "does not currently block any Fediverse servers".
I messaged Qoto admin to ask whether they would block servers that incited genocide. Admin replied Qoto would not block such servers.
I asked about the danger of radicalisation, and they said "(people) aren't going to read some random thing on the internet and turn bad. It just doesn't happen."
Have blocked qoto.org, would encourage others to do same.
One of the easter eggs in the third party #Mastodon app Toot! for iPhone/iPad is the ability to play ”TooterBall” with profile pictures of follows/followers.
He was due to end up in court in a couple of weeks time, where Twitter was potentially going to force him to go ahead with the deal. It's possible that he is trying to jump before he's pushed.
