That take could be seen as reinforcing the right-wing lie that Walz somehow evaded military service. He served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, and then, like most other soldiers who have served that long, he retired.

I think it's also worthwhile to avoid any suggestion that soldiers are to blame for the wars that they're ordered to fight.

I would hold individual soldiers responsible for obeying illegal orders, such as Russian soldiers' orders to attack civilian malls and apartment buildings, or their kidnapping 20,000 Ukrainian children and shipping them back to Russia.

Here I'm just concerned with potentially giving oxygen to a false right-wing attack. They'll probably try to swift-boat Walz with their weird "evaded military service" slur.

Illegal orders are those that violate military or international humanitarian law, like torturing prisoners.

During the Vietnam War, another war that was predicated largely on lies, many Americans blamed returning soldiers for the war that they were ordered to fight. In the 1980s, we collectively recognized our grievous error, and sought to atone for our sins.

Here's an example of the disgusting swift-boating lies with which GOP is now bombarding Walz.

Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years. Then he retired. He didn't "drop out." He never saw combat, and never claimed that he did.

JD Vance served in the Marine Corps (as James D. Hamel), for 4 years, and then left. He too never saw combat. He was a public affairs officer. Basically, a publicist.

I see no need to help the GOP attack Walz.

Indeed, the GOP is erupting in transphobic hatred... against a cisgender person. The possibility that they could be incorrect doesn't even occur to them. Because their hatred is based not on facts, but on how powerful their hatred makes them feel.

Similarly, when the Nazis falsely claimed that the Jews had crashed Germany's economy, that wasn't meant as a factual claim. It was a statement of intent.
