I am proud to present GlobalTalk Chat 1.2, taking it from a rushed #MARCHintosh hack-job to something I'd be proud to release as shareware 30 years ago!
The headline update is it now allows anyone to host their own room! And it works on any AppleTalk network, not just #GlobalTalk
This is pretty cool. Apple's old Time Capsule devices run NetBSD, so in anticipation of their deprecation of AFP in the next version of macOS this guy got samba 4 running on it
@SuperDicq I've been indoctrinating my kids with the PSP versions of Project Diva (they're still stuck on Easy mode... for kids...) so I'm curious when the youngest will make the connection...
I guess Vtuber names will be the brainrot names for the next batch of kids... Can't wait to see those show up! Knew a Japanese girl named Clara (in hiragana くらら) which I guess is some Anime reference, so that was the previous batch of Otaku names...
@_the_cloud@likesoldmacs I can't believe he doesn't have this dedicated ImageWriter carry bag, designed for everyone who regularly commutes with their ImageWriter
@mac84tv When I was testing in Snow to fix the program working on black and white Macs, I had to downgrade Macsbug to 6.2 for it to work, the later versions would just freeze up the emulated machine… I've never had good luck with debugging stuff in emulators, i'd often crash QEMU itself!
(anyway right now the chat server is frozen again and I'm not home right now so it'll be an hour or two before it gets restarted)
@mac84tv Hmm, weird. It works on older systems, and newer systems. MacTCP shouldn't make any difference since it only uses AppleTalk.
If you have spare time (huge ask), I could get debug information if you (1) installed MacsBug (2) ran the version with debug symbols (in BaroNet:landisk:Junk Bin), and when it crashes run “sc7" in macsbug and take a picture 🙇♂️
What the heck does "No release received" mean? I was doing local testing on my G4 and it was failing with this error. Then I looked over to the G3 running the live chat server and it's showing the same error.
My PowerBook G3 Lombard is dying :/ it crashes with random errors within a few minutes after boot. It’s never anything specific or in any specific process (looking in MacsBug)
I ran a full TechTool Pro RAM test, it passed all the tests for an hour before the machine just froze
Also it doesn’t seem to like any of my expansion bay optical drives, makes me wonder if it’s a power supply issue (tried 2 different yoyo supplies so the external is fine)
@adamrice@paul_ipv6@thomasfuchs For comparison, these were the definitions Apple used. (Except they used “Transportable" as a more PC term for "Luggable" :)
It seems Luggable was when they were the “suitcase”/”briefcase”-style formfactor where the front opens up, or machines that folded out but had no battery.
Once they were under 20 lbs and had a battery they became “Portable”
Under 12 lbs is "Laptop”, under 5 lbs is “Notebook”.
@GreenSkyOverMe The Japanese ones for our kids just have Name, Sex, City and Date. Not even mother’s name.
The hospital also had an option to issue English ones which I did to register our kids with my home country and those also had a bunch of extra info like weight, birth time, parents names, exact address etc
So I guess different countries include wildly different information
