This is some bs. If AOSP development is made less publicly accessible it does NOT " simplify things for developers" but rather it hinders it for de-googled privacy respecting ROMs and their device ports. The need for continued and ramped up efforts developing alternative mobile OS's, like Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish OS, Droidian, Mobian, Postmarket, etc. is even more apparent with this move by Google. #linuxmobile#degoogled#android#aosp#ubuntutouch#sailfishos#mobian
@evan - If anything, those "creaky mechanisms" of the Constitution have been one of the few things that previously slowed a bit the US's dive into blatant authoritarian oligarchy. The words in the Bill of Rights and the 14th Amendment - IF they were actually enforced, are worthy ideals towards protecting some of our essential human rights. But sadly these are the exact things under attack by so many of those that often previously claimed they were concerned with the Constitution.
@bruces I don't care about ethics questions or myriads of potential unintended consequences, the 11 year old inside of me is just all in for bringing back mastodons and dodos into every backyard.
Was most excellent getting to meet and hear Evan Prodromou, the main brain & big kahuna behind the team that brought us the Activity Pub protocol, at the Fediverse House talks yesterday at the Speakeasy for SXSW. Always great to see that a dev doing excellent work is also a truly cool person too. @evan#sxsw#austin#activitypub#fediverse#foss#tech#irl#meetups#atx#socialmedia
@GottaLaff - every African, Pacific Island, and Latin American nation is now going to start looking way more towards China (if they haven't already) as the more stable authoritarian major power to trade with, now that it is apparent that the USA is no longer stable, nor a proponent of any kind of "free" or "fair" trade.
@gleick - the grandparents already witnessed this in their time - in the 1930's in the USA there was a movement with significant numbers and some celebrity members (such as Charles Lindbergh) sympathetic to fascists, white supremacists and Nazis, as well as a movement of foreign policy isolationists. There was even a sold out rally of US Nazi sympathizers that occurred at Madison Square Garden in 1939. Luckily these people were in the minority rather than the majority at the time.
Was curious and just checked out Nostr, lol, what a cesspool. With some very careful curating you might be able to get an ok feed there, but I certainly didn't in my quick dive in. Yet another example how Mastodon really is "best in class" as far micro-blogging platforms go these day. #nostr#cryptobros#socialmedia#mastodon
@dansup@pixelfed - I'm thinking Android over all has more users, but there are a few third party Pixelfed clients up on F-droid, a couple of which have seen recent development and pre-date the official app, so thinking maybe the official app on iOS unintuititively might have more downloads. Of course I might be wrong in this!
@tek - well, obviously you know your kids better than I do, so do what you think is best. I just wanted to note that the advice in your original post might not be best for other parents to heed though.
@tek - that is an excellent attitude and more power to you. What I am trying to say is that we can make the decisions to oppose evils ourselves, and as adults more likely have a better level of experience to judge how best to effect that in a particular situation - but we still shouldn't encourage our kiddos to endanger themselves, given they might not be able to reliably navigate the situation in a safe way.
@tek - given the record of people arrested sometimes getting delayed in release or even "lost" for months in the system, as well as noting the abuses done by CPS in some places, while I sympathize with the spirit of this post, I don't really think it is necessarily good advice for parents to impart to their kids. Better to tell them to observe and report immediately what they saw, rather than endanger themselves - adults are the ones that can better choose whether to place themselves in between.
@dansup - yes please! Friendica is great, but the gui is too cluttered and confusing for most people. Diaspora is great but it lacks features (e.g. editing after posting) and needs to use ActivityPub.
