@dressupgeekout it sure would be nice if renting out those sorts of spaces didn't cost literally thousands per month. how am i supposed to support a hacker coop or bike shop if a storage unit isn't legit enough??????????

woke on a whaleheartThat Mozilla, when seeing that their IRC network was stagnating and then observed the wider landscape of chat solutions, chose to shut it down and switch to Slack should have been such a bigger point for people to notice. A nonprofit (not true, by the way) with a semi-stable money cache from legalized bribes chooses not to beef up their network or explore IRCv3 or XMPP, no. Just join the latest in venture capital bandwagons.
@kirby Sounds like something Reddit or Hacker News (or an older iteration like Metafilter or Slashdot) would do as an April Fools gag before realizing it was just as, or more effective than hellbanning/shadowbanning.
GoToSocial: It's all private single user instances from what I can tell and I'm not in the right space to become a server admin for now.
Epicyon: See GoToSocial. Also this is probably the one fedi solution that I know about the least.
Honk: See GoToSocial.
Misskey (+ derivatives): Slow as heck to browse through, no thanks.
Mastodon: Faster than Misskey but MRFs and the bubble timeline are too handy to ignore. Also higher maintenance == shorter potential instance lifespan
Pleroma: When one finds an admin and/or community that isn't filled with temporarily embarrassed feds, the experience is quite good. But maintenance seems to get out of control with over 50-100 regular posters.
Akkoma: Pleroma but with more bells and whistles (bad) like the bubble timeline (good).
@allison >ideal is roughly phpbb but with concessions to modern quality of life features Can you elaborate? I'm aware of some forum software that does (for example) dynamically adjust the main width to accommodate both mobile and desktop. Also have some feeling that there's others that still support OpenID/Indieweb-ish protocols nowadays.
@icedquinn A quick search shows that it supposedly is meant to line up with VA/digital synths like the JP8000/Nord Lead, but also there's only 4 voices like the Roland Boutique remakes. also the USB-C MIDI/Power combo.
Would rather buy an NTS-1 or one of the Meeblip boxes at that price range, no? It's at a range where one can find/make synths with available schematics and firmware, so 🤷

woke on a whaleheartHave now learned the following things about Harley Davidson: - Used to build 125-250cc 2 stroke 'Lightweight' motorcycles from the 1940s to 60s - Outsourced said 2 strokes to the Italian maker Aermacchi in the 60s and 70s - The India division collaborated with another Indian company to produce the X440 in 2023 Think that it's incredible that HD never even tried to do a concept design on a big thumper/650cc single and that it took Harley India to contact another company to compete with Royal Enfield's sharp growth. Now to wonder if the X440 will ever be brought to North America.
Wonder just how much of this also applies to the motorcycle brands that are held by Polaris?
current ideas for a new CSS style::::: - stock appearance with marginal improvements from the opposite, like a tiny pinch of left padding that the "ground floor" style designed for early Neocities or awsm do - 3 or 4-bit/teletext/CGA/ANSI/16 color scheme - converting the plan 9 color scheme into a #theme - Solarized Light but higher contrast - honestly a high contrast "a11y" #theme that vaguely feels retro-ish - absolutely no external fonts, system only - XHTML 1.1 compliant - still figuring out best way to add right side sidebar (yes i know about flexbox)
@icedquinn Having once used one of the 'professional' tier Casio synths, a big portion of what people want is a combination of brand image and something that looks pretty while making noise. This is because if one wants a quality hardware synth for as cheap as possible, the preenFM2/3 and Waldorf Blofeld have been on sale for years at this point. And even so, most synthesizers have been at least capable of Good sound for multiple generations now.
Still unsure how manufacturers plan to build MIDI 2.0 deeper.
@icedquinn A good amount of synth parameters become redundant if "knob per function" is a aimed goal. The problem with the DX7 and basically every synthesizer until the Roland SH-201 & Korg MS2000 was that companies saw an opportunity to reduce costs, turning so many into LCD menu diving tedium. At least every flagship keyboard after the 00s generally has the excuse of having over 9000 points of modulation to a rough official external program.
The newer Opsix comes closer to what was possible to make modifying FM easier, though I hear that it's far from perfect. Not related, but oh wow the Microkorg 2 is real and it even has more than 4 voices of polyphony!
@icedquinn what 2 sliders does to a synth (see also: basically every synthesizer that had to behave like a rompler and needed a third party editing tool)
@icedquinn The N50-300 chips are in essence Desktop Skylake performance in the older Atom-Celeron tier power envelope. Excellent upgrades from the mostly respectable bumps offered by Gemini/Jasper Lake such as the N5150 which was closer to Desktop Ivy Bridge in speed, same wattage.
The endgame of low spec computers are eInk monitors, with or without color. Could maybe say OLED or monochrome LCD, but I don't have the specifics on which is The Most Efficient.
