woke on a whaleheart (harneyb@decept.org)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Jul-2024 08:00:36 JST woke on a whaleheart This is about any potential future instances that I need to look through. This first part is just going over the relatively prominent fediverse microblogging solutions. The next will list any that piqued some interest.
GoToSocial:
It's all private single user instances from what I can tell and I'm not in the right space to become a server admin for now.
Epicyon:
See GoToSocial. Also this is probably the one fedi solution that I know about the least.
Honk:
See GoToSocial.
Misskey (+ derivatives):
Slow as heck to browse through, no thanks.
Mastodon:
Faster than Misskey but MRFs and the bubble timeline are too handy to ignore. Also higher maintenance == shorter potential instance lifespan
Pleroma:
When one finds an admin and/or community that isn't filled with temporarily embarrassed feds, the experience is quite good. But maintenance seems to get out of control with over 50-100 regular posters.
Akkoma:
Pleroma but with more bells and whistles (bad) like the bubble timeline (good).-

purple 👊✊💨 (purple@nya.social)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Jul-2024 08:00:36 JST purple 👊✊💨 @HarneyB@decept.org Goto & friends are widely blocked by small instances due to abuse potential. anything that lets folks make their own instance with no oversight is a risk. fairly sure we've blocked them since the ukraine/russia phishing spam.
misskey isn't slow. however there are a handful of north american or european instances, so chances are you were browsing some instance hosted out of someone's apartment across the world -- of course it's going to be slow. the official server is notoriously slow overseas.
our misskey instance is hosted fairly close to me (i think?) and both the latency and throughput is great. videos are slow if your version of normal is youtube -- well within expectations.
if i HAD to jump ship TODAY i would spin up a self-hosted fork of Misskey on my existing infra. yes, i'm privileged in that way, but it's also my job and no different from a mechanic replacing their own car's broken parts.
i say a "fork of Misskey" because stock Mi has a few naggles and interoperability issues that most folks find annoying (by now i find them quant/"a feature" so i can take it or leave it)
imo, if you are the type to appreciate the jank, give Misskey a serious try. if not, try one of the forks 🦈
just fucking avoid mastodon at all costs. for real. the administrative overhead is astronomical. the rest of these shits almost take care of themselves.Doughnut Lollipop 【記録係】:blobfoxgooglymlem: likes this.
