@HarneyB even things as simple as on-site notifications bar for when threads have been updated helps a lot, as much as I'm loath to hold up kiwifarms as a positive example of anything their forum ux is basically top tier

Can you elaborate? I'm aware of some forum software that does (for example) dynamically adjust the main width to accommodate both mobile and desktop. Also have some feeling that there's others that still support OpenID/Indieweb-ish protocols nowadays.
