First time I went to Powell Library was just to see where Bradbury dumped all those dimes. Also discovered it is, In Fact, still a Really Rockin' place to work from.
Ray Bradbury used 98 dimes to write the first draft of "Fahrenheit 451" on a coin-operated typewriter
"Microsoft Research, in spite of an astronomic budget, hasn't come up with any truly useful technology so far. Name one, just one, major piece of useful technology that's ostensibly been invented or developed by Microsoft. One single original concept, that's all I ask. Name it, and I'll tell you where they got it from."
@tek In some ways HP is my alma mater in The Industry.
I will Not buy HP printers at all. Especially with their new "Subscription Ink" bullshit (printer phones home you're out of magenta again and a magenta cartridge shows up...no, I mean No, Hell No). And I'm printing in black asshat, print without magenta. But I was done when they chipped the cartridge like a Keurig Cup.
I recently had cause to buy a printer/scanner and the only sane choice was Brother.
@tek The 1200n and a few others could take a Tandem-Warhead HEAT Round ... you might have to replace the fuser and vacuum the toner dust out, but they'd still work. (Also laser printers...not this inkjet stuff, very different animals.)
@tek In my brief stint in sales when I was the 17-Year Old Smart Kid I sold the original HP 550DJ and the HP 750DJ Color (And their cost was almost exactly their model number no kidding) it was Huge. People could afford laser quality at a 1/3 to 1/4 the barrier to entry but upkeep was 1/10 of TCO.
Naturally An Executive figured out a way to completely fuck that up.
It might actually be cheaper and easier to own a laser these days.
(Dunno, I'm a Unix guy so I "print" to files, as is proper.)
G: Shes your moother, you should take care of her. E: Like I'm taking care of this? No. If madre wants me to take care of her she can get off her candy ass and come back to the Coast. SHE was born here, not me (Cal) so if she wants me to take care of her...Southwest has a flight that leaves at 1400 ish to the coast.
[I know the flights from IND to SFO...oddly not SEATAC...looking)
Anyway, don't fight against Moms. It's dumb. I do it anyway.
@skotchygut@snipe I can get from Seattle to Snipe in about four hours (three fucking about). Don't fly commercial. That's just goofy.
[Says the guy that can fly small aircraft and have stolen them in the past ... stature of limitations. :D the FAA might disagree but I personally handed "FAA1" (think AF1, but not...she had a military escort in her little Gulfstream VI) a medallion that went to space.
I don't dwell on things like this.
Leaving the country? Sure. Flying in close? Use local.
@tk From "When HARLIE was One v2.0" by David Gerrold*
The poem HARLIE wrote is actually
"IBM, You BM, We all BM, For IBM."
* I have a copy of "When HARLIE was One" but finding the Expanded Novel has proven to be an unsuccessful tri-decade hunt. At one point I actually contacted Mr. Gerrold to ask if he knew if there was a secret stash or a hidden copy for sale and he sadly replied that he wasn't aware of such a stash.
