@evan I understand that. I don't understand the argument where it's not derivative in either the literal and copyright senses. If you could not make something like x without using x as part of the process, it seems straightforward to say it is derivative.

@evan I'm not sure how it could not be derivative. If the training data didn't slurp up all the repos on Github, it would not be able to generate something that looked an awful lot like a repo in Github.
If I trained a model on the collected literary works in the public domain and then asked it to produce a for loop written in Zig, no amount of prompting could make that happen.
On what grounds would that not be derivative?

"I don't want devs doing manual coding" is a phrase that was said on a call today and then an explanation that if AI doesn't work, fix the AI until it can do the work.
Cajoling a bot that doesn't work and being responsible for its failure. God fucking dammit.

Plagiarism is cool if you first launder it through the fossil fuel industry.

@molly0xfff substack costs $700/month?! God damn. I thought it was more they were providing a solid enough product at VC subsidy prices.

This is a serious question, but how do you have the time to do all this work? Are these projects bringing in some revenue to offset the need to take on other work? Are you independently wealthy? Just a sheer amount energy every day?
If you've blogged about this at all, I'd love to read it.

@shiri @snarfed.org @sarae Sure, but this isn't bridging to another Fediverse server.
I have tools within Mastodon to deal with other ActivityPub servers without talking to admins. This isn't that. This is bridging to corporate networks which is what many of us are explicitly trying to avoid.

@ntnsndr @rose_alibi What's the name of the co-op hosting provider? I'm currently on DO for all my hobby stuff but would prefer to use a co-op.

AI cannot be value neutral because its training data comes from the past. AI has a built-in commitment to the status quo. I’m not saying that it cannot be used in interesting or helpful ways, but it’s not value neutral and its effects are heavily skewed to assist the already embedded powers within the existing structures.

@dansup Thanks for tag surfing! If it helps, I was browsing via the phone app. Just getting into pixelfed and I am enjoying it so far. It's exciting to have an alternative to Instagram.
