A four-panel picture. The first three show Gru in front of a flipboad. In the first one, it reads "Learn to Program". on the second, "Make recursive function". on the third "no exit condition". the fourth panel is the whole picture itself, recursing infinitely at a quarter size
Now imagine coding in front of twenty teenagers, we're doing a bit of #Python Turtle, and to change the line's thickness, I have to type out the `.pensize()' method.
... but don't forget they also cite state-sponsored surveillance as a reason.
You know, like the kind any non-US resident user of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... is subjected to from the NSA, as we've known for more than ten years.
But yeah, it's only bad when it's the Bad Guys doing it.😐
Yes. Questioning the hegemony of text as an I/O format is a more viable thought experiment than questioning maths.
Interestingly, putting the start of the downturn in the 80s (I'd agree) links to the rise of personal computing, and the broadening of the user base(widening of the problem-space) w/ generalised use of text encoding...
causality? Correlation? time coincidence? one of the pinch points in CS history that further narrowed our conception of 'computers'
(Didn't know about the Kay thing - I'll go find out more, I'm uneasy by the long shadow Papert casts over CS education)
So, asking the right questions, back to the 'minimum "useful" OS' - useful to what?
If you threw this question couched thus to the Fedi, can you blame the respndents for interpreting 'useful' based on their reality tunnel, and come back with a text editor, a C compiler etc...?
I'm looking for a well put together written case for institutions (academic, professional) to set up their own Mastodon instance.
Something that not only highlights the obvious benefits, but also that the technical costs are within the capacity of most places that have a decent IT department.
Please do not make the case here, I'm looking for links. 😜
Mastodon is predicated on community instances, and built for following/engagement with hashtags over accounts.
But if we've learnt anything from Late Capitalism, is that just because something is not needed it doesn't mean you can't build your whole business model around it.
I teach computing in middle and high school and this is very real.
I would like to extend the concerns of neo-luddism regarding the de-skilling of workers using automation to the de-skilling of end-users for the sake of profit.
Tech companies have a financial incentive in users having _just_ the right* amount of proficiency. With whatever that bar is getting lower by the decade.
