    @BigDuck @sickburnbro It's so funny, you have people on the extreme ends who both are incredibly against what Israel is doing. Like they could agree on nothing else, but this.

    @D00B @Tony @GolfCartLady @MrFuzzland OK so there's a few ways to go about this.

    Weekly SQ injections of Ivermectin for 4 weeks usually does the trick. Some cats won't want to visit the vet this often, but it also takes application of treatment entirely out of your hands.

    Prescription ear drops like Tresaderm work really well and is the fastest treatment, taking only like a week or two. But it's gonna be painful getting those drops in that ear, BUT it's designed so that you don't have to clean the ear after treatment. They DO have tresaderm and I believe some other otic topical drugs that are a one-and-done treatment of ear mites, I imagine it is more expensive though BUT the clinic can apply them for you :CirnoWink:

    lots of fla/tick meds will actually kill and control ear mites. Basically any flea/tick med with selamectin, moxidectin, fluralaner, and saralaner will kill an ear mite infection. Chart related are some brands available; Keep in mind Bravecto, Nexguard, and Credelio are not labeled for ear mites, but they do kill ear mites. Most of these are topical. I would not suggest Seresto collars for this simply because there is a lot of human error with getting the right fit on and thus not getting enough of the dose, BUT it is a good budget option. These are one & done treatments (and preventatives), but you WILL need to clean the ears after treatment, or the build up of mite crap will create a new problem.

    Don't get the no name or never heard of over the counter shit, it's AIDS and some of it like Hartz is well known for killing animals. Also be careful with counterfeits; there have been a lot of counterfeit serestos that are killing pets.

    Then there are some over-the-counter treatments (again, DO NOT get Hartz), just make absolutely sure you're reading the instructions carefully and the product is labeled for cats. Many of these treatments are not killing the incubating mite eggs, so you'll need to continue the treatments for at least a month to make sure you scorch the ear canal of mites. So for example if the instructions are to put 3-5 drops in affected ears once every 3 days for 2 weeks, up that to once every 3 days for 4 weeks. I would recommend a good ear cleaning after these treatments as well to be on the safe side.

    If you are bringing the animal to a vet, do not clean the ears prior. We want to see that nastiness. Also do not clean the ears directly after a treatment, obviously you'll be taking the meds out.

    Also keep an eye on aural hematomas. I've attached some pictures of a serious case and a more mild case. It can happen with ear infections; they shake their heads and break blood vessels and the ear swells up. It's a rather painful condition that, if not treated, turns into cauliflower ear where the ear is all crumpled and covered in scar tissue. It is treated with the cat sedated, incising the ear to drain fluid and stitching it back up.

    I hope this helped!

    Some anti-non-human-primate-hate for the TL

    I love how the gorilla runs to show off their baby like 'Hey! I got one of those!'

    I personally like how the gorilla kisses the baby on the head - did it learn that from watching patrons at a zoo? How many people are kissing babies on the forehead at the gorilla exhibit? Obviously it's not a natural extinct for them. Just peculiar.

    Read em and weep. But literally. Go on, I'll wait.

    ....

    This is called a crural hernia, or femoral hernia. A hernia occurs when a portion of the abdominal organs (usually intestines) protrudes through a hole in the abdominal wall. In this case, the uterus was torn and the tissue separating the thigh and abdomen broke (both likely via trauma), squeezing the kittens into this empty space at time of impact.

    Good news is mother cat actually survived. Bad news is all of the kittens did not. On top of the cord likely being severed, they would have internal injuries and blunt force trauma on top of being premies. Even on x-rays some of them appear to be obliterated, so I am not surprised. I honestly am shocked that momma cat made it.

    Earlier this month, Oakland Zoo in California assisted in rescuing an 8-month-old female tiger with severe bone fractures due to calcium deficiency. They found 10 pathological fractures in a CT scan, and also noted 50 percent muscle atrophy.

    The fractures appeared to be at various stages of improper healing, resulting in abnormal angles in her limbs. Said abnormal angles means the animal was unable to move properly, creating muscle atrophy associated to those limbs.

    The tiger's recovery will involve building calcium, physical therapy, and after months of recovery of the limbs, possibly surgery. The zoo is cautiously optimistic for a full recovery though, but arthritis may develop in later years.

    The tiger cannot perform natural behaviors due to medical issues and is currently receiving specialized enrichment for mental health and to help build muscle. No history on her case because it is an ongoing legal battle.

    It's not swarths of cat killings and missing cats over the past 2 decades that is making UK cat owners say they had enough and keep their cats indoors...

    No, instead it is a string of cats (roughly 80) that have had patches of their hair shaved in the past year...

    Owners are freaking out thinking this is abuse - it's not. Owners are worried the hair will never grow back right - it will, it just takes quite a while for the hair to 'age out'. Owners this this hurts the cats - it doesn't, in fact whoever is doing this hasn't burned or nicked the skin. Owners believe this is traumatizing to the animal - Fair, it may very well give the PTSD by bullying from the neighborhood cats, but we can't diagnose trauma in animals yet as it's literally impossible to diagnose so :akarinShrug:

    In fact I think whoever is doing this might be some sort of groomer. The lines are really straight and the cuts are very even.

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE cats in businesses, especially the attention whoring cats that can not stop being up people's asses (sorry, cat allergy sufferers.)

    HOWEVER I think the bare minimum if you're going to do this, is to have like an 'air lock' situation, 2 sets of doors so if the cat gets out, it's still not outside. Otherwise, you're putting a lot of stress on your customers to not accidentally kill/lose your cat/s.

    @CatLord @BowsacNoodle I've heard some people suggest a bathing routine would really help with shedding on cats. While I am sure that is true, I am also sure that would cause a lot of stress for the cat and the owner as well. And bathing too much can dry the skin. So for cat owners I tend to just recommend bath on an as needed basis, ie they get really muddy or stinky or something. Unless your cat is a breed that requires regular bathing, or is already pretty calm with baths.

    furminators are an option, I call it the easy but possibly damaging option. While it does work, it also cuts and tugs the coat so it will always 1) be catching fur even when it's not loose (so it looks like it's working great) and 2) creating loose fur that will soon be shedding fur. I don't think the creators anticipated this, and it's not like it's going to kill your animal. It does work, but basically works a little too well.

    I suggest a nice brushing with a rubber curry comb. The rubber will gently catch the undercoat. You may be surprised how much fur comes off.

    Once done with that, and you want to be done brushing soon, I recommend an Equi-groom for the top layer; it's going to get all the hairs on the top coat that has been loosened by the rubber curry.

    If you have a medium/longhair, you may want to first run a greyhound comb to try to work through the thicker coat, because none of those other combs are going to help with knots, tangles, or a coat so thick they can't properly run through it.

    However, do not attempt to untangle mats. Mats are painful, and can damage the skin. They should be shaved off.

    Alright it is getting warmer out, I think it's time to go over a sensitive topic;
    Outdoor & Indoor/Outdoor cats.

    I guess I would like to preface this with saying, I am not totally and completely against outdoor cats. Shelters will often have a host of cats that don't do well inside, like cats that grew up outdoors or cats with incontinence or cats that are very easily over-stimulated, or semi-feral. Without people willing to keep them indoors/outdoors or outdoors only, they would be euthanized.

    However, I do believe that if you're getting a new cat you should test out keeping it indoors first. And I believe kittens should absolutely be kept indoors. For a multitude of reasons;

    1) Cat health. You already know cats get hit by cars, eaten by wild animals (or other pet animals), get into fights with other cats, and contract lethal and incurable diseases. But do you know at what rate? Because it probably seems like a far off issue if it didn't happen to you.

    The National Traffic Safety Administration reports roughly 5.4 million cats are struck by cars a year. 97% of those cats do not survive the incident. There are probably many more that are not reported.

    According to the Humane Society of America, out of the 22,000 cats that entered their system and had a non-live outcome, the most common reason was FeLV. Even among indoor pet cats, it is estimated 3-5% have FeLV; the rate for outdoor cats is suspected to be much higher. Cats with FeLV are not expected to live past 3y

    Estimated 4% of cats in the US are suspected to have FIV - 75% of FIV+ cats are males. FIV positive cats usually present as normal, until the autoimmune system starts causing havoc or a normal URI turns into a deadly situation. After infection, the median lifespan is 5y.

    There is no way to even guess how many cats are killed by dogs, cats, other domestics, wildlife, or people, because the vast majority of the time the body will not be found. However, if you look at lost animal statistics, one study found that 34% of cats went missing and was never found, with 2% being found dead. When entering shelters, cats have between 1.5-5% chance to be returned to owner.

    Which brings me to 2) Wildlife. Not only are cats sometimes the sole or main factor for a species being endangered, they are sometimes the sole reason a species goes entirely extinct. It is estimated that cats will kill 1.3 - 4.0 billion birds and 6.3 - 22.3 billion mammals every year in the united states. Based on one study, cats were found to bring home less than a quarter of the animals they kill, and one study found they will only eat 30% of prey killed. Also cats get a variety of wonderful butt worms from eating wildlife.

    Cats also fuck up our major flagstone species as well; They can spread their diseases to Bobcats and Catamounts and other big cats via indirect contact with saliva. Cat shit can spread toxoplasmosis into waterways and affect frogs, toads, turtles, reptiles, and even fish. Cats actually caused a toxo outbreak in some sealions in california, which kills it rapidly. Toxo can infect bears, deer, moose, bison, marine mammals, marsupials, small mammals, and even birds. They're fucking up primates in south America currently too.

    And not as common, but domestic cats also hybridize with excessively rare wild cats like the european wildcat, which used to have populations in England, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, and France. They are NOT just feral domestic cats, they evolved parallel to the domestic cat, but IIRC I think they are more or less extinct and all hybridized.

    The Humane Society of America reports that 93% of owners that let cats free roam will lose at least one cat outside. That rings true for me as I've lost both of my indoor/outdoor cats due to letting them free roam.

    I get it if you already have an indoor/outdoor or outdoor only cat. Or you get a cat that's half wild, or doesn't use the litterbox, etc. I'd prefer a cat have a home than be euthanized at the pound. But I am asking that you maybe just consider keeping your next cat indoors, maybe with supervised outdoor access
