@CatLord I got one of those push button retractable hairbrushes for the cat. So nice for brushing it and means I don't have to give it as many baths.

@BowsacNoodle i got an undercoat grabbing brush with a button on it. the button doesn't really do anything lol. i just have to grab the hair and chuck it in the bin anyway. and the regular cat brush is easier on their skin/coat and grabs enough loose hair so i just use that. they still shed heaps...

@CatLord Ever bathe your cat? Mine hates it but it's good to do with long haired twice a year to get the dirt and boogers out. Found a tick once on one of mine that way.

@sapphire @CatLord One time I bathed my cat and it escaped the tub and climbed up the curtain, shredding it in the process, and shredded the blinds the same way. I usually am more careful now.

@BowsacNoodle @CatLord my cat almost sliced my jugular when I tried to put a harness on her today, if I tried to bathe her she'd actually kill me

@sapphire @BowsacNoodle i've been necessarily picking the big cat up for some things every day here, and he doesn't like it, so my arms look like i've been cutting... thankfully, i've figured out ways of doing it that aggravate him less, so i'm healing😺

@CatLord @BowsacNoodle I've heard some people suggest a bathing routine would really help with shedding on cats. While I am sure that is true, I am also sure that would cause a lot of stress for the cat and the owner as well. And bathing too much can dry the skin. So for cat owners I tend to just recommend bath on an as needed basis, ie they get really muddy or stinky or something. Unless your cat is a breed that requires regular bathing, or is already pretty calm with baths.
furminators are an option, I call it the easy but possibly damaging option. While it does work, it also cuts and tugs the coat so it will always 1) be catching fur even when it's not loose (so it looks like it's working great) and 2) creating loose fur that will soon be shedding fur. I don't think the creators anticipated this, and it's not like it's going to kill your animal. It does work, but basically works a little too well.
I suggest a nice brushing with a rubber curry comb. The rubber will gently catch the undercoat. You may be surprised how much fur comes off.
Once done with that, and you want to be done brushing soon, I recommend an Equi-groom for the top layer; it's going to get all the hairs on the top coat that has been loosened by the rubber curry.
If you have a medium/longhair, you may want to first run a greyhound comb to try to work through the thicker coat, because none of those other combs are going to help with knots, tangles, or a coat so thick they can't properly run through it.
However, do not attempt to untangle mats. Mats are painful, and can damage the skin. They should be shaved off.

@Tepid_Tapir @BowsacNoodle i have one of these. the big cat seems to love it. i stopped using the furminator for the reasons you mentioned. just seems to be stripping the coat and kind of pointless as well. the regular brush in this pic works fine for getting loose hair

@BowsacNoodle no, never, and they are far too wild for me to do that i reckon. @Tepid_Tapir what u reckon about dog/cat hygiene and such?

@CatLord @Tepid_Tapir I wish I could gently vacuum my cat but that's never going to happen. I tried a glove brush thing and it weirds her out.
