@jack I 100% agree with the sentiment of this, but also have some nitpicks. The first being that this is REALLY HARD - I always try to design animations to make sense, but sometimes your tools just fight you every step of the way. That's an argument for better tools, of course, but we have to build with what we have. Sometimes, you have to cut a corner. It sucks but the time might be better spent elsewhere.
@jack The principle I try to follow instead, which is more vague but covers much of the same ground, I think, is that the UI should feel solid. It should feel like a thing.
This, again, means no random flashes of white, no half-loaded content that jumps around, all of these makes the UI feel fake, and not solid. And, again, the animations have to make sense so that they feel like a thing moving around and changing shape, not loose part scattering. Solid.
@jack The second is the phrasing of the principle - I don't think it quite works. For one, even if you design a perfectly sensible animation, screenshotting it in the middle might STILL look like nonsense. It's an animation, it's not meant to be looked at while static. Pausing any video will usually look dumb, because pausing something that moves does not look natural.
@gwm I don't think you had a "duty" to do anything. I think you wanted to do something - prevent genocide - and you made a choice that ended up hurting that goal. That has nothing to do with "duty", and everything to do with how things work in practice.
@gpilz@gwm And you think you're going to change *Trump's* mind then? You think he's going to stop the war? The guy who thinks Gaza would make great beachfront property? The guy who meets with Netanyahu in private?
Or are you also a selfish fuck who just doesn't care about outcomes and only care about your own ideological purity?
@gpilz@gwm You are absolutely fucking naïve as shit, and I don't give a single fuck about the people who live in the US here. I don't live there. I want people in Gaza to stop dying and your absurd and simplified view of the world is making you act to make things worse for them.
@gpilz@gwm Because THAT IS NOT FUCKING TRUE, that's why. That is just not true, and that is propaganda you have been fed, and happily accepted, because you are clearly fucking naïve.
@gwm Come on. It's 2024. At this point you need to be able bring yourself to admit that Jill Stein is Putin's puppet. She is supported by one of the biggest fascists in power today.
It would be lovely to have a viable green party in the US. But *you don't have that*. You have a Russian op. Jill Stein is not what you want.
Harris is far from perfect, but is also nowhere near is a fascist. Trump and Jill Stein, however, literally are.
@jk What I've settled on as my internal understanding of what LLMs is, is that they're like someone trained a dog to take meeting notes. Now, even if it kept misspelling words, and would put in random comments about wanting to go for a walk or how great sticks are, that would be the most amazing thing you've ever seen. It would absolutely blow your mind that this was even possible.
But you wouldn't hire the dog to take meeting notes. Except, in this case, people are trying to.
@Gargron Some days I think we treat software development far too cavalierly. This stuff can be dangerous! It can completely change the path of your life if you are not careful.
