@scott@Dianora Wow, so much misguided effort there... It's bad enough that no one is fooled when you get someone with a thick Indian accent who has been forced to assume an American-sounding name.
#PhotoOfTheDay is an aisle of the old Map Room at the USGS West Coast Headquarters in Menlo Park, California. This place was like a temple to topographic maps, with some very old handmade benchmark disks on display too.
Sadly, it's been gone for a while now. We did an interview with the head of mapping there (I was helping to make a benchmarking video) and he explained that he had none of his people left that did actual field work. :(
@youronlyone@youronly.one.ofcl That's depressing, and insane. I guess they want a simplistic way to check your socials and tick that box. It should be illegal.
I have a friend that had an Insta account suspended for no apparent reason. I think she ended up having to make a new account there after getting no answers as to why her original account was suspended.
I wouldn't have deleted my Insta account if they hadn't driven me to do it.
@jeridansky OK, so it's the same area at least... It sure looks like one of those little farms on 92 when you're driving towards HMB and are almost there. We used to stop at some of them... Brings back good memories, maybe because it means you're almost done fighting the weekend traffic on 92 to get there! 😁
@hikingdude Yes, I've had a lot of good hikes there and several good backpacking trips with friends and family.
They have an annual "backcountry weekend" where people are allowed to drive in farther to a grass parking area and hike/pack from there all weekend, which I did with friends like five times as well.
@hikingdude@FotoVorschlag I love when that happens! It's very rare here but there is one very large park where you can hike for a day or two without seeing another person, if you are lucky.
The park is bigger that Bermuda and has 200 miles of trails, yet it's less than an hour's drive from Silicon Valley. One entrance is popular but the other end is hardly used and almost never by common day hikers.
@hikingdude It's pretty enormous and it covers a couple of large ridges. Part of the park is also designated as Wilderness where even mountain bikes aren't permitted, and they take considerable time and effort to reach those more remote areas. So that's a pretty effective barrier to keeping out most hikers. I always enjoy visiting when it's not too hot and dry there, whether hiking or backpacking.
@jeridansky My icon labels are still white, maybe because I'm using dark mode? Anyway, I did tweak a number of settings after I upgraded, and hardly notice most of the difference anymore. But it was mostly a step backward as far as UI goes.
