Washington Dulles International Airport is 30 miles and three counties away from Washington and people figure it out. OAK, on the other hand, is closer to downtown SF than SFO.
SFO just doesn't want the competition plus the worst people in SF are snobs who think they're superior to their neighbors across the bay.
"One quarter of all Paris residents now live in public housing, up from 13 percent in the late 1990s. The mixité sociale policy, promoted most forcefully by left-wing political parties, notably the French Communist Party, targets the economic segregation seen in many world cities.
'Our guiding philosophy is that those who produce the riches of the city must have the right to live in it,' said Ian Brossat...who served for a decade as City Hall’s head of housing."
Reviving the War on Drugs in SF is not going great: "the crackdowns have[n't] prevented overdose fatalities, reduced street violence, [or] improved neighborhood conditions... At best, enforcement strategies have improved some blocks at the expense of others, while creating turf wars that have increased gun violence. We need to use a comprehensive strategy with evidence-based solutions." - @deanpreston
#SFPD has effectively been on a work stoppage since the George Floyd protests. This is not a staffing problem; they didn't suddenly lose that much staff. The whole idea of hiring more cops without accountability for the ones we have is nonsense. #SFPol
trying a thing: i'll match up to $300 to UNRWA USA, which provides aid to Gaza and was just defunded by Joe Biden. It's tax deductible. A commenter on @MLNow wrote about SF's response to homelessness: "We offer shelter – and if they choose to reject the offer, they no longer have the right to block the sidewalks”. This is a common misconception!
If that were true, SF wouldn't be getting sued. The Breed administration is fighting the lawsuit *specifically* for the right to hassle people and take their stuff *without* a specific offer of shelter (of any quality)...
sometimes i despair about the extreme state of inequality in the world and its self-reinforcing nature, as the wealthy can use their wealth to hire security, hire PR, generate media, buy off activists, and effectively buy laws (campaign funding/lobbying) to stave off redistribution.
other times i'm inspired because their need to do this maintenance all the time reveals the status quo's actually fragile nature, indefensible when revealed for what it is.
Caltrain is announcing when it switches from diesel to electric next fall, it'll have:

@dansup I was in the TestFlight, and it didn't seem half baked to me. It was a much better experience than what mobile web is currently, which is all I have now that I got kicked out of the TestFlight.
hey, Rashida Tlaib is bravely telling some truths that are not popular in Washington and being viciously attacked by the right wing and so called moderates for it. can we back her up?
i've never tried this before on mastodon but i'll match up to $400 to her re-election campaign. reply or dm me your receipt to be matched https://rashidaforcongress.com/
@aral did you personally see the tweet screenshotted on the left side of this image? or how do you know it's authentic? just asking since twitter/x screenshots are easily faked.
New paper: “people with stronger social ties tend to be more economically conservative than otherwise similar people with weaker social ties, due to a substitution effect between formal and informal social insurance.” https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/c9fy5
On the other hand, isn’t left organizing—unions, mutual aid, community organizing—all about building stronger social ties? Isn’t atomization better for the Right? Not sure how to reconcile this.
“Although private jet travel makes up only 4% of the global aviation market, it produces about 10 times as much greenhouse gas for each passenger… climate activists have disrupted Europe’s largest private jet trade fair by chaining themselves to aircraft to protest against the sector’s carbon emissions.” 👏
