@tylervu@sanae@chema@tito_swineflu@scott i’m on the south side of Bernal. half my neighbors are middle class with normal jobs and half are tech workers with much more money but still not enough to be conservative.
Not my experience of Bernal at all but maybe it’s because I’m lower down the hill (on the Mission side)?
I think Bernal has the strongest working class vibe of all the SF neighborhoods. Whether your paycheck comes from Google or Good Life, folks here know we need to stick together. In 2016, there was a modern-construction mansion on the hill with Bernie window sign.
Not surprising that we were able to fend off Trevor Chandler.
@chema@tito_swineflu@scott One thing that was interesting is that I had my absolute worst experience canvassing in Bernal (everyone else was fine). I don't want to list the exact blocks but it was a few right next to the top of the hill. It's in a precinct that voting data suggests is otherwise progressive. I wondered what was up with that - just rich people at the top of the hill?
I pay close attention to union household density during election season and Bernal is usually high up there. It's a neighborhood where the people canvassing usually live right there and it's dem club is particularly vibrant and effective because of it. Good folks. I know this season was challenging for some activists because they were working on Gaza issues at the same time.
@tito_swineflu@sfba.social@scott@carfree.city There are many longtime union members up there. They were able to buy their homes 20-30 years ago and continue doing their best to help their fellow union members. Same with Potrero, the Filmore and parts of the Avenues.
there's something very reassuring about seeing the Mission continue to vote progressive
seeing how much condos sell for... and how a lot of my neighbors' jobs seem to be like "VP, Marketing, such-and-such"... and how much noise the virulently anti-homeless cranks make... and all the outward signs of gentrification, it's good to know that's not the whole story of this neighborhood
there are also stark differences between Portola and Mission/Bernal on almost everything on the ballot. every Portola precinct majority opposed K, every Mission/Bernal precinct majority supported it. Peskin was top vote getter for mayor in most of Mission/Bernal, Portola mostly went Lurie. etc
as more votes have been counted, Jackie Fielder is looking stronger in the Portola. it used to be deep purple down there, now it's a lot closer to even, with her opponent only reaching 55% in a single precinct. she's even winning one Portola precinct. #sfpol
