@MediaActivist in fact that article is where I read about the org idea.

It's a nice idea. But where you have small dependencies that don't update often and the developer gets a pittance a stipend no questions asked should be the minimum.

Plus orgs end up with a huge overhead if you aren't careful. People running the orgs also should be paid a reasonable wage.

It's why I'm kinda at the UBI, universal healthcare, education and free public transport.

@MediaActivist We're part of the infrastructure now as projects and developers.

Infrastructure needs to be invested in to face the challenges of our world.

Imagine what we could do if we had healthcare and a base income. We'd do marvels.

I don't mind if people just took the money and did nothing either.

You don't want a disaffected workforce doing the bare minimum. You want people to care.

@MediaActivist Some projects are also being invested in by legislatures to develop new systems , new communications.

Perhaps continuationous investment in those projects, developers and their support systems would be a better value down the line.

Rather than hope every project invested in becomes a unicorn business.

@MediaActivist You could have a core set of developers, passionate about public code to help the commons.

Who could be working from anywhere in the EU for example, including in areas that are facing depopulation as people go where work is in the cities.

To help to improve connectivity in those areas and contributing to those local economies.

For those who think we need an org to like merely give mental health support and when burn out happens to not give them any money at all. Just so long as the project is maintained.

We live in a capitalistic society that does not value everyone being paid something even if they aren't contributing right now.

@hello you know all @FediThing did was ask the folks on the instances list who were consensually on that list if they would defederate threads. In a DM, not demanding publically to shame them. In a DM.

Every listing service that fedithing provides is curated. There's a back and forth for the individual listings in the directory. The listings for instances is not different.

The best way to preserve the fediverse is to provide support to it.

Pay your instance admin if you can, if you can't boost their fundraiser posts

Pay the developers who develop the software you use on there if you can. If you can't, boost their posts and help them fundraise.

Also pay the projects non Dev folks. Because they help Devs to focus on the code while they do community development, moderation etc.

It's an ecosystem and we can't rely on the whims of VCs.

The time to consider the public health policy for a conference is well before the announcement for next year.

And online options because you aren't prepared to consider public health policy creation because you can't really do enforcement are weak toast.

On any online space, you should consider who you give power to. Who has the control over who you choose to associate with? Power doesn't corrupt. It reveals.

People in real life do choose to avoid dangerous or toxic places.

All that the instances who sign the fedipact are doing is signalling to some of us that somewhere is safe for folk who don't want to engage with Facebook at all.

This is a Freedom of Association issue, not a Freedom of Speech issue.

If you wonder why I bang on about masking and why I'd like conferences to be more inclusive and have a #HealthAndSafetyPolicy like @phpledge recommends it's because I have Long Covid.

It's not fun on a day like this with the pollen count going up and listening to myself gasp for air as my bronchia has major damage. It's not fun knowing I really can't risk another infection.

It's also not fun, knowing at best I'm an afterthought.

@chargrille We found this travelling in Turkey, when France pushed for recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the general populis even now deny it was a genocide. The locals felt the French were stirring up the Armenians.

This has geopolitical ramifications right now in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

I remember seeing a cool robotics demonstration on British TV in the late 80s early 90s.

It was a group of small wheeled robots I think doing a weird sheep simulation. What would happen was out of a group of say 7, one robot would be leader, one would be a scout and wander and explore, the rest of the group would follow the leader.

I think it was the University of Sheffield?
