So a data researcher at #huggingface decided to scrape a million bluesky posts as a dataset.

Then proudly announced what they did.

Then apologised and took it down. 😐

This is what someone brought up in a culture that hasn't been brought up to consider consent does. The kind of culture that declaims it's easier to ask for forgiveness after than permission.

I say a culture, but I shouldn't sugar coat it. This is what being brought up under white supremacy does.

Any fine or tax is a drop in the ocean. I'd rather the EU committed to using and investing in FLOSS solutions and not pay the money to big tech in the first place.

If nothing else for strategic reasons, mainly being most big tech is in the US. So perhaps on premises, or at least government EU hosted cloud.

We've got trillion dollar companies now, it's past money. They've got the power to manipulate politics. They put a lot of money into lobbying our legislatures.

@dgodon @XavCC Perhaps it is wishful thinking, but I'd like EU investment in the EU ecosystem and not aiming for VC funded Unicorns and Zebras.

We know a sizable percent of those unicorns leave for the US.

I want a more distributed digital EU market.

Looking at archived #multicast projects from the 1990s. I feel a little sad.

All these projects with different distributed use cases for multicast.

I wrote this back in March. Thinking about the massive collection of data we've put out there, helping billionaires to make money and for them to use that data against us.

Where did that data get sold to?

Data protection law in the US is very Opt out. You should be worried. To be honest everyone in the world should consider the US "A country of concern" when it comes to data protection.

The thing that stuck in my mind this morning was how my Grandfather survived and helped others escape occupied France during World War 2. He was bad ass, but he was a bad ass because of others who helped him. Who sheltered him. We need to help each other and shelter each other in anyway we can.

I refuse the argument that means the existing applications/platforms couldn't be certified as open.

If any part of them aren't available for us to study, share, modify, redistribute or the other parts of the definition, it should not be considered open. This is where we should draw the line. I'm honestly disappointed in the OSI. They are eroding the definition.

Much as it saddens me, I think the first step in this road was that initial announcement calling itself the marketing department for Free Software.

I always considered the OSI as custodians of the OSI definition. How naive of me.

@MediaActivist @perpetrator this is why I'm a fan of repair it cafés and twinning with dregrowth.

We're about to have a whole bunch of hardware become obsolete with Windows 10. Of course if folks are still in the ecosystem with Outlook etc that's harder.

But folks wallets are crunched. Which is why finding other communities you can work with is important.

Suggest events to introduce the wider community to FOSS applications.

@perpetrator Perhaps if you can reach out to student groups. Does your college have clubs and societies?

If it doesn't this could be a start.

You may also want to reach outside your college to the local community. Like are there any anarchists bookshops or community hubs out there?

Folks who are aware of racism and ableism in the Fediverse will also be familiar with this concept.

The reasons could be for anything. A love for friends or folks they look up to.

A fear that Free Software will die without Stallman and whichever hand picked protegee he selects.

But the truth is the Free Software Movement wasn't directly disseminated from Stallman. People brought us into this movement, just like others and Stallman's behaviour pushed folks out.

I saw some toots last night, where supporters of Richard Stallman claim the Stallman report is false and character assassination. They claim to believe in evidence, yet choose not to read the report. Which is mostly complied from decades of Stallman's own words.

There's a concept called active ignorance, where you need not to know harm that's being done. This is how despite decades of Stallman being Stallman his supporters will not read the report.

The software we write and design can help or harm others. So it needs to be transparent, the code needs to be open and we try to design with those rights and freedoms from the beginning.

It's why I'm really concerned by the OSI diluting those ideas with the Open AI definition.

The training sets need to be accessible to everyone. You can't have an idea of why Open AI makes a decision, summarises a thing, recommends an action without those sets.

One thing that struck me with the May celebrations for Free Software was that despite their founder recovering from cancer, none of the events had a public health policy.

Some folks have known about Stallmans behaviour and attitude for years. Heck we've read his posts.

It's something else when you see it all compiled and analysed by @report_press. It's a gut punch.

Stallman is consistent in his opinions about the minimisation of Sexual Assault and the erosion of consent.

No, not erosion, fully cognisant, enthusiastic consent doesn't factor in his writings.

@report_press I'm also appalled at the failure in governance at the @fsf with the efforts to "reappoint" RMS to the board.

We expect better of our leaders. Especially when they aim to be the leaders of a movement.

The board let us all down.
