Huh. It sounds like it may be possible to federate and still hosts could legally deny them permission to scrape.
I’m no lawyer though. That’s just how I read that first link.

No. I like defederating gab.
My issue is your pretending like the population of gab and threads are on the same level.
It’s like you don’t know why gab formed in the first place.
It was because they all got kicked off of other platforms, like Facebook.
There are no “normal” people on gab. There are normal people on threads.
I’m starting to doubt I’ll ever get a straight answer to this question.
It’s just dogmatic “but meta” over and over. I only ever ask this in response to “concerns” about data/privacy but weirdly never get a response from these people who purport to be super worried about it.
So we’ve finally made it to the “but meta” stage of the argument. It’s not actually about data collection, privacy, or seeing unsavory things in the timeline (because, again, you’re capable of blocking entire domains). Just “I don’t like meta”. Which is fine.
I just don’t feel like I need a paternalistic admin to protect me from the scary internet. If you do, that’s also fine.
And I plan on moving, unfortunately.

I’ve been asking everyone bringing up privacy/data concerns the same question and I never get an answer.

I wasn’t aware. What data can an instance see once federated that they couldn’t get before?
lol good lord. THAT’S abhorrent position?
Don’t be so dramatic.
SysAdmin gone cloud heldesk basically, data hoarder, political junkie, vegan, atheist. I ❤️ PowerShell. Scripter, not a programmer.
