I'm saying "actually" too often IRL and tried to cut some edges for the sake of brevity this time. On the Fedi the most popular stance is "no strict moderation rules enforced = nazi" and I'm taking this as a default view of the people I talk to here.

If you have people, who are racist (misogynistic, fundamentalist etc.), they will find a way to communicate unless you completely strip the privacy from everyone.

Speaking cynically - it's better for the mainstream understanding of "good" to have one cesspool where it's easy to lure unstable minds than to hunt for them through dozens of E2E encrypted invite-only chats.

Apparently strictness of the blocking depends on the provider.
matrix.org is not in the official blocklist. Chances are my friends use VPN though, I never asked.

I know a bit about what happens in RU for some reason. Some VPNs still work, tor works with the bridges and obfuscation, ssh-tunneling works. For talking to my friends Matrix just works as well.

Граждан (добровольно, "на понт" или случайно) отхлёбывавших из банки с какими-нибудь летучими мышами, бурозубками или птицами на том БФ довольно много, а завирусился (в хорошем смысле, да) только один. Удивительно.
