Signal is a secure messenger, but there are interesting alternatives, such as @matrix , @session , @delta , @simplex or XMPP …
If you’d like to learn more about these options, have a look at the responses to this toot.

@jze @metin I tend too disagree. Yes you can run your own server. I do myself.
But the matrix.org server is too big and vector.im too. So Matrix as a company has a central position and will get notice of nearly all relationships and Communication. That‘s centralistic.
@lb1a I feel pretty much the same. I can also say that, more than the technical limitations, I also have ethical concerns with Matrix. But for me to be able to ditch worst things (like Whatsapp and stuff) I had to set up some bridges on Matrix a while ago. Wish I had done that on XMPP, but it would have taken much longer and I couldn't afford that.
Anyways, it seems PixelFed Dev Matrix channel is working, if you feel like giving it a try with no compromise. You can probably use Matrix.org's IRC bridges and feel nostalgic. I'm in there right now. #pixeldev:matrix.org
@andreaslindholm https://matrix.org
(Jag känner inte till någon öppen svensk Matrix-server, men det är något jag rekommenderar föreningar/företag etc att sätta upp. Kör en egen för min familj)
@jwildeboer https://matrix.org/ is a great alternative too and no need for phone number or email to create an account
@dragosr @cy Dunno, maybe. Europol's clarification to The Register was, "The Matrix protocol (matrix.org) is by no means connected to the Matrix secured communication service that was targeted in OTF Continental." https://www.theregister.com/2024/12/04/eurocop_crack_matrix/
