@JugglingWithEggs The very last few years of the 90s, when it seemed that Northern Ireland had been sorted out as well, stick in my mind as a really great time. It only lasted a few years though, 9/11 really did change everything, and none of it for the better.
I work for a large organisation, and apparently the latest policy is to stop hiring temporary contractors and start recruiting permanent staff again.
How was this policy change communicated to us in an email? With this:
A substantial review of our Talent Acquisition operating model, capacity and service levels over this last year has indicated that to truly elevate our recruitment and sourcing service to the level that this organisation needs, we must increase our internal resource proposition.
@aral That's bonkers. Although Bank of Ireland so I'm not totally surprised.
I assume you have the equivalent of UK's building societies in Ireland, they'd presumably have somewhat less capitalist lending criteria. Maybe? Hopefully?
@cwebber@tchambers Yeah I'm not sure Zuck has really thought it through.
"Here is our clean-cut prudish network. We would like to interact with the network started by queers, furries, trans activists and other people for whom sex and sexuality is an absolute core part of their identity".
@Sunny@feditips I don't know if this is just a feature of the glitch-soc version of Mastodon that my server uses, or whether vanilla Mastodon does it as well.
But for me, the reply box in the advanced interface grows in size according to how much content you've typed there. Especially useful as this instance has a 1000-character limit.
I do feel more than a little sympathy for @ernest.
In January he decided to try to build an ActivityPub based messageboard system.
A month ago he decided the code was stable enough that he could release the first alpha version, and stood up https://kbin.social to demonstrate it.
It attracted quite a few users per day and proved that it might just be an exciting new entry into the Fediverse.
And then Reddit's admins did their thing, and suddenly thousands, millions, tens of millions of users are looking for a new home. And although a few other brave souls have also created kbin instances in the last few days, there's simply not enough capacity to even begin to cope with all the demand.
@chris@mike@Hey_Beth@atomicpoet@fediversenews Absolutely this. When tech journalists say "I can't grok Mastodon" what they mean is "When I just sit there and churn out the same old nonstop stream of links to articles just like I do elsewhere, I get zero engagement"
@chris@mike@Hey_Beth@atomicpoet@fediversenews In fact maybe we should stop calling Mastodon and Fediverse social media and start calling it conversational media. Because if you're not willing to engage in constructive two-way conversations, it's not the right place for you anyway.
@loke@neil I think the key point is that the client needs to understand the text/markdown MIME type, otherwise even if markdown text is used in a post it doesn't get formatted
