@emilygorcenski To hear Sarnoski talk about it, the movie is about how characters process grief. But in my view, it's also a movie about other movies, written as a love letter to late '90s/early '00s cinema like Adaptation, Fight Club, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's really about how a teenage Sarnoski immersed himself into this whole genre of absurdist films as an escape to help work through the death of his father.

@emilygorcenski Maybe I'm overemphasizing the role of Adaptation specifically, but I think that the nods to the film are everywhere, and the choice of Nicolas Cage was not a coincidence. Sarnoski was a first time feature film director, and got the performance of Cage's life out of him. This is someone who went in knowing Cage's acting like his own skin.
