@morph Nice. I never measure mine but... I should. But then I should water and turn it, and I don't do that very often either. Still - get good compost from it!
It's the mental gym you have to do to get to a point where all of the basic social norms we've lived with for 70 years (like - we all have, reluctantly maybe, to pay taxes because who pays for the pavements otherwise?) are now trash, that freaks me out.
My institute still trains members, explicitly, that tax avoidance is immoral. While just looking the other way from the fact that half the members earn their living from tax avoidance advisory practices!
@aral every day you think - that's got to be as sick as humans can be.
And here we are.
Imagine deliberately being more evil than UHG?
I had an American business woman recently tell me, a Chartered Accountant, that it is morally wrong for me to just pay my corporate taxes, and that I had a fiduciary duty to avoid them if I could.
This corporatist thinking is so fucked up, it's insane!
@AnarchoNinaWrites hey - thanks and that’s a good clarification. I get Americans shout at me - a Brit - when I describe my views as liberal and anti-capitalist. For us liberal can mean: pro-abortion, pro-immigration, pro-human rights for all, pro-free health care, pro-green, pro-union, anti-austerity, pro-degrowth. But I know that doesn’t translate, so good to be clear what you mean by the term - thank you. And yeah - I know that Auntie
To all the “they’re not helping the cause” folks criticising environmental protestors, I’d like to just correct your offended liberal sensibilities. They are. They are raising awareness in a world where our media ignores them unless they do this stuff. & it is working.
Your criticisms of them are working for the polluters and capitalist murderers who have recruited you into their status quo army. Don’t be in that army. Stand up for the front line protestors. And donate to them if you can.
@thereaders@mutualaid@mutual_aid have you got another way to pay? PayPal is looking to take nearly 10% in FX margin - thieving bastards. And they don’t let me change the currency I send in…I could send in CAD but they don’t allow it any more it seems
My little lad had a bad leukaemia when he was 20 months - in 2002. He had care at Great Ormond St - I calculated at the time (I’m an accountant) at somewhere between £250k and £500k, entirely free to us. And he lived.
The US families sometimes didn’t fare so well. After they’d drained all insurance & resources their kids often died of something entirely treatable.
Folks need to think very hard before voting for either #Tories or #Labour.
Does make you wonder who that 17% are though? I mean - wtf?
But staff recorded the names and addresses of all the people who came to vote at the Embassy in #Bern presumably so they could send flowers and chocolates to their families back home.
Maybe in the US where the fossil fuel lobby has so much impact, but in the 1990s in the UK I think both parties largely accepted the premise. Those who opposed it - Norman Tebbit I think? - were fringe and considered a bit loony. That changed later of course.
"As most know today, Mann’s hockey stick graph, which he first created in 1998 with scientists Raymond Bradley and Malcolm Hughes, challenged the conventional wisdom at the time that climate change was a natural phenomenon "
I studied Geogrpahy 1990-94 and anthropomorphic climate change was so widely accepted that lecturers complained they couldn't get funding if they didn't include it.
@jakelazaroff First up - I'm not Jewish so careful what I say: but I do get accused of being anti-semitic by centre left, centre and right wingers because I do not 'stand by Israel' for eg.
The problem with conflating fascists with those of us who aren't into colonialism, land theft & apartheid as 'anti-semitic' is that it doesn't really give you much language to describe folks who throw bricks through synagogue windows or want to open death camps again.
That makes complete sense to me. I'm not saying it doesn't exist but personally I have never met overt anti-semitism on the left. ie Hard anti-Jew rhetoric or holocost denial. Plenty of anti-semitic tropes where folks should know better - but I have also seen plenty who, when told they had gone there, backed right off and apologised.
@mastodonmigration@gdawirs@Gargron that we can’t answer that question does not make it ok to be having secret deals with one of the most fantastically evil organisations this planet has ever seen.
Plenty have set out theoretical paths for them to fuck the #Fediverse. Straight forward denial would be reassuring. Lack of denial may safely be taken here as confirmation.
Hate having to nag the missus while I’m away, but it’s 4 weeks working overseas and the pots and seedlings in the greenhouse need a little tlc in that time. So she watered and checked and sent me pictures.
Dad to two lovely grown up kids, hubby to a beautiful human; Brit, Chartered Accountant, aid-worker, entrepreneur, outdoor enthusiast, green(ish), fly fisherman, axe carver, politics are strongly anti-right, S&G enthusiast, terrible guitarist and worse singer, born in 1971; he/him"a decent human existence is possible today only on the fringes of society, where one then runs the risk of starving or being stoned to death.
