    Not the onion:

    “A group of investors sued UnitedHealthcare Group on Wednesday, accusing the company of misleading them after the killing of its CEO, Brian Thompson.
    …
    The group, which seeks unspecified damages, argues that the public backlash prevented the company from pursuing ‘the aggressive, anti-consumer tactics that it would need to achieve’ its earnings goals.”

      @aral @wackJackle “We demand more antisocial behavior, damn the CEO’s safety!” pretty well describes US private insurance.

      @aral every day you think - that's got to be as sick as humans can be.

      And here we are.

      Imagine deliberately being more evil than UHG?

      I had an American business woman recently tell me, a Chartered Accountant, that it is morally wrong for me to just pay my corporate taxes, and that I had a fiduciary duty to avoid them if I could.

      This corporatist thinking is so fucked up, it's insane!

      @contrasocial

      It's the mental gym you have to do to get to a point where all of the basic social norms we've lived with for 70 years (like - we all have, reluctantly maybe, to pay taxes because who pays for the pavements otherwise?) are now trash, that freaks me out.

      My institute still trains members, explicitly, that tax avoidance is immoral. While just looking the other way from the fact that half the members earn their living from tax avoidance advisory practices!

      @JimmyB @aral @wackJackle

      It's a culture where "profits = morality", so naturally this is how they think.

      The normal ones in the financial sector must pretend that it's a matter of ethical practice in order to live with themselves, so in that sense it's existential for them.

      @mcnado @aral @wackJackle this is a completely wrong take. The company has fiduciary duty to the shareholders. They lied about their projected earnings by covering up the data they had showing the massive brand damage. You cannot do that. You have to disclose that information to the shareholders.

      All they had to do was NOT lie to the shareholders. So now they're going to get ripped to shreds in the courts and lose a ton of money to cover the damages they're asking for.
