@jimcarroll 80 million Americans — including so-called pastors and so many of our major media outlets — know exactly what Trump is…and aren’t absolutely repelled by it. On that metric, our democracy got mauled in 2015 when he declared candidacy for his first term.

No trial, no matter when it’s held, will change those minds; holding out hope that it might when so many of public information channels are flooded with poison today is, I fear, misplaced.

@Nonilex@masto.ai Trump built himself quite a trap. The only bondable asset he has is real estate, but the court case he lost has found that his valuations of that real estate were wildly inflated. A bond issuer would have to put a real value on the assets used, likely a fraction of what Trump has valued them at, thus reiterating the court's findings of overvaluing assets

@GottaLaff @1dalm SCOTUS hasn’t thrown him a lifeline in any of the past cases, and they won’t now, or ever. Why not? Even with my cynicism dialed up higher than 100, it strikes that saving Transactional Trump from himself offers SCOTUS *nothing* power-dynamic-wise that they don’t already have, apart from maybe another black mark in the history books.

This op-ed from retired military describes the horror that not just can but will result if a sadistic, narcissistic sociopath who delights in causing actual pain, suffering, and death in retribution against whoever he believes are his personal enemies, is ever allowed into high office in this country again.

"If there was anything I could do to produce a favorable outcome, more campaign stops, more interviews, I would do it. But I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources. We don’t have a clear path to victory. Accordingly, I am today suspending my campaign," says DeSantis in a video. Trump "has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, or repackage formed of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents."

@Teri_Kanefield If they don’t simply punt it and say that each state can make its own determination, I would not be shocked if they uphold the ballot exclusion. Reason: they’ve made it clear they are not going to install a dictator, and this case finally gives them the opportunity to throw a dagger into him at no cost to their own lifetime tenure (“I came to bury Caesar, not to praise him”).

@peteriskrisjanis @Teri_Kanefield Teri has often mentioned that the US political system was designed to make it very hard for any one person or party to capture all the various levers of power that are built into it. It’s also what makes progress exceedingly slow, but I’ll take it.

My wife is looking forward to deleting her Instagram account once she can connect with the same folks from her Mastodon account. Being able to remain in touch with over 100M people who still use Meta products out of the comfort of an ad-free, privacy-friendly platform like Mastodon is a game changer.

@DavidBHimself @tchambers They’ve been forced into adopting open standards as a condition of staying in business in Europe. So long as that includes their building a migration off-ramp to the wider Fediverse (which if they don’t build themselves watch for an OSS project that uses Threads + Masto APIs to do it for them!) I think we’ll all come out alright.

@feditips @Gargron Yet. New things get rolled into old things in stages, that’s just normal IT development cadence. The whole point of the APub deal with the EU was that antitrust claims would be set aside if Meta tears down their walls and lets their users exit with their social graph. If they don’t fulfill that part of the bargain, they lose their ability to operate in the EU, yes?

@feditips @Gargron Threads is going to lay in ActivityPub support whether we like it or not, because the EU won’t let them stay in business there if they don’t. That ship has sailed; nothing we do here can change that.

What instance admins *can* do here is block Threads. If they do, they’d also block Threads users from…easily moving to their friendly neighborhood Mastodon host.

Who would that help, and more importantly, who would that hurt?

@thomas @binarytango I say this to all instance admins — we are guests in your homes. Each of you should and will do what you believe to be in your own instances’ best interests. Personally I believe that attempting to isolate ourselves from capitalist social media (as opposed to finding some uneasy way to coexist with it while blocking only actual abuse) is short-sighted and doomed to fail. Offering a superior experience to what Threads can, is the way.

@jimcarroll “March is in jeopardy” = Judge C. saying in subtext: “SCOTUS, if you don’t want President Trump to fire all of you on January 20, 2025, you need to put the grease on this, please.”

Would you take a gentleman’s bet that this is back on track before New Year’s Day? If you win, I will plead extreme embarrassment and will start planning my move to Canada (not kidding). But if I win, you park the cynicism. Deal? 🤝
