@nerdpr0f@mattly@cR0w Didn't anybody bring up privacy? Had I been there I would have likely interrupted and said something like: "Shouldn't y'all be considering the kids privacy first? Talking about opt-in protocols instead of bemoaning the fact that you can treat kids like lab rats"?
Pinus longaeva (Great Basin bristlecone pine) at ~3,048m (10,000ft) in the White Mountains of California. P. longaeva are the oldest known living non-clonal organisms on Earth. One tree, named Methuselah, is estimated to be 4,855yrs old. The dead stump pictured below was likely several thousand years old when it died and has been dead for a couple of thousand years. P. longaeva wood is so dense, it does not rot, rather, it erodes like rocks do.
I don't understand why we can't all agree that, in whatever time zone you live, we set our clocks to noon when the sun is at its zenith on the summer solstice? This jumping ahead & falling back is nuts. Even what we call it is nuts. There's only one way to save daylight & that's to use a solar cell to charge a battery. Well, I guess growing a plant saves daylight too. Changing our clocks in no way whatsoever saves daylight. It's a scam people!
This is interesting: Nightshade is a tool artists can use that will poison image-generating machine learning models. I lean far toward the copyleft / open culture side of intellectual property--I want people to steal my stuff!--but, I guess, because I have other issues with machine learning models in the art space I tend to like this guerrilla hack artists can use to poison the machine learning training data well. Thoughts? https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/10/23/1082189/data-poisoning-artists-fight-generative-ai/@nina love to know your thoughts? #Art#CopyLeft
At CES, I read everything is "AI"--confirming my suspicion that AI is all about marketing and not about intelligence, especially in the consumer.
Among the "AI" products on display are: AI pillows, AI vacuum cleaners, AI refrigerators, AI bird feeders, AI shoes, AI belts, AI dog bowls, AI baby strollers, AI plant pots, AI mirrors, AI baby cry translators, AI BBQs, AI toothbrushes, and so on. Oy.
It's the "40th anniversary of the GNU operating system and the launch of the free software movement!"
Fifteen years ago, on the 25th Anniversary of GNU OS, the comedian / actor Stephen Fry recorded the following tribute--which also serves as a great introduction to what free software is and the philosophy behind the free software movement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_mS4CIXcLY

This is a single frame. There was moon light illuminating Fannette Island and the bay. I did a little dodging and burning and color grading in #darktable running on a Linux box.
