The chinese proverb “近朱者赤，近墨者黑" translates to "Those who are close to vermilion will turn red, and those who are close to ink will turn black.” The idea here is that your character and behavior can be influenced by the company you keep.

Deriving from first principles, what are the real reasons conservative men feel this way?

1. When women had no economic power or social standing apart from marriage and children, they were forced to be with the lowest quality men for survival purposes. Childless cat ladies on the other hand, have full economic agency to decide either way.
