I started this a decade ago, picked it up again a few days ago after being inspired by your recent posts. I've mainly been working in the 'refactor' branch but once I've got it back to feature parity with master (which I'll be renaming to main ofc) I'll merge

@thomasfuchs originally I write these tools for well, actual photography with colour gels, but we all know how well that'd work out with a dog staring back into your own soul unless of course we had some sort of colour gel wheel we could quickly rotate for each exposure

@dalias it's hard for me to call everyone i know using it a scab (in any sense of the word including anti-labour LLM usage) but i'll be goddamned if there aren't a lot of LLM lovers out there who really want to infect the community

@dalias It's incredibly baffling to me how frequently it has been demonstrated in the course of uutils development how little people have referenced even coreutils CVE data or taken care to understand really basic things, like, /dev/tty or the file descriptor-oriented calls that make shit safer

it seems less like an exercise in safety and more a clean room effort to relicense a thing in an ecosystem popular with the kids

When you reframe your entire life experience around these parasites as non-consensual, it really puts the anger into focus and makes it a lot easier to imagine what a better world would look like, sort of like exiting a decades-long abusive relationship.

@dalias if I had a nickel for every code review pushback I got from some people on lack of input validation in private interfaces in the hot path, when said validation occurs higher on the stack in a manner befitting that context, I could probably beat Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike at that arcade operated by that one really crazy guy

i understand and empathise with LLM skeptics who feel like they are being attacked, because by and large, there is immense peer pressure for us to change our ways. even hedging my thoughts in a "you do you, bestie", the LLM boosters feel incredibly entitled to bring in unsolicited comments about their LLM workflows at best, or will attack you and say "fuck you and your woke politics" at worst

our only wish is to be left alone. theirs is to control everybody else. the divide is incredibly clear

@dalias @soatok @david_chisnall @inex yeah the domain/process isolation is the main thing here; i guess i specified "language" here because i'm putting the final touches on the FFI portions of a programming language i'm implementing with a very thin/general VM and so i've got all that on my mind

@soatok @dalias @david_chisnall @inex oh and also: maintain your test harnesses in another language, preferably through a memory profiling+debugging tool because no leaks, no use-after-free, no out-of-explicit-allocation-access should be acceptable. oh, and your memory profiling tools should know about any custom allocators you've made, too, and yes, that means your little arena and buddy allocators

• Valgrind/Address Sanitizer
• gcov
• Obsessive use of RAII
• Insane number of tests

and this philosophy must be present from the beginning. look at Monocypher...good lord
