    RE: https://mastodon.social/@swiftlang/116166420295348698

Is that account actually official / run by Apple? 🤔

Apple should release a Mac maxi. It's essentially the same like a Mac mini (or multiple of them!), but housed in a larger case that allows for storage (or compute) expansion. You could inject more compute by slotting in more Mac mini mainboards/or just whole mini's (similar to a NeXTcube). And have space for spinning disks or M2's. It wouldn't necessarily provide more performance, i.e. it is specifically not a Mac Pro, but expansion.
I know, it won't happen. But I bet it would sell.

@mattiem @obrhoff Thinking it is that entrenched is a mistake, IMO. They are good, but there are, not great, but perfectly acceptable options.

@mattiem @obrhoff There is not much you can do about it but buying at better alternative places. Which seems surprisingly hard.

@mattiem @obrhoff Buy a $150 Samsung phone to toy with it. I did. I don’t *want* that and it doesn’t compete ignoring externalities, but it is surprisingly good and capable.

@mattiem @obrhoff I think this is more obvious in non-NA markets where Apple is a major player but not the majority.

Remember how you forgot how obvious it was to buy Amazon stock when Corona started?
Or Thyssen-Krupp when Russia started the war and the US didn't stop them?
Maybe the obvious thing to buy now is European IT infrastructure/software stocks. It's a bet, but maybe a whole lot of US things have to be replaced soon.

@inthehands I'm not sure it is fuzzy, they seem almost polar opposites to me.
    a) is people actually believing the thing will enhance productivity, by say 8.5%. (might be, unsure myself)
    b) is people already knowing that this is *not* the case, but that unrelated (cough) things break the economy and blaming AI is a very convenient hate target.

@inthehands tbh I can’t really see a loosing scenario for Amazon here, even if the US market collapses. Yes maybe they shrink down in advance, but they still have a decent almost monopoly.

@inthehands I think the AI part may be a pretty weird combination of:
    - some managers actually drank the cool aid
    but also:
    - blame it on the AI

@inthehands My idea was more that they don’t actually have to distract investors by AI or whatever, that part seems a little off. If times get worse the investor pitch would still be: we are the ones who own the market, whatever size.
