But what I hope for is a hybrid ActivityPub/ATProto service. Technically, very messy and with massive tradeoffs, but collaboration is the only truly social move I see here.

It is entirely conceivable to me that ATProto “wins” the technical battle, Mastodon “wins” its ideological battle, and most users end up back on X, Threads, or Instagram.

There’s this anti-social quality to it all that is truly poetic. And horrible.

I cannot figure out if understanding programming no longer matters or matters more than ever.

And the worst part is every response I might get to this will somehow make it more unclear.

I have completed The Stanley Parable. I think.

I had no idea what the game was about going in, and I would say that worked out perfectly.

What I mean is I think it is a mistake to just accept this and try to act like it’s normal.

@obrhoff there’s a careful balance here. It doesn’t exist anymore but I think we can and should also make that very uncomfortable in Apple spaces basically forever.

@helge @obrhoff I think boycotting such an entrenched entity is, as you say, hard. It might may you feel better though, and that’s important and I support it.

Ahh and there is it. A US bill that would strip me and my son of our citizenships. I knew this was coming, and isn’t passed yet. But still.

Over the last few months, a bunch of promising leads haven't worked out. These things can take months, so who knows? But in the meantime, I have room for more work.

I still think sometimes about a post I read that compared Swift vs SwiftUI in an effort to help beginners decide which they should focus on learning first.

Programmers are usually fed a steady diet of features and bug fixes. But occasionally they get to work on performance problems. This development methodology is known as intermittent fasting.

I regularly see both “AI cannot write software” and “I am using AI to write software successfully”.

The emotional allure of the former is a big reason why the scientist in me refuses to discount the latter.

(I do not use AI myself)

@erikk I did not invent the feedback boycott idea. It’s just that now the stakes couldn’t be higher.

This was a hard one. But we, as developers for Apple platforms and as humans, have a responsibility to respond.

@obrhoff Can you help me understand how language mode is a factor here? Is the problem that it generates classes and/or non-Sendable value types?
