Ended up next to the translator for a meetup between two companies at the last day's social evening meal once. He said he usually asked to have jokes presubmitted so he could actually provide a funny translation.

For unprepared jokes he said he'd usually go "a joke, about this level of funny".

It's definitely a universal thing. And I definitely experienced it and heard it talked about growing up in Sweden.

Although if you don't experience it yourself you might not have picked up the cues of others experiencing it. And filtered it when seen in media.

Pee shivers too, although that probably falls under "probably not discussed in polite company" for 1980s Sweden.

Hmm, maybe I have false memories. I agree that was the norm on VHS, but I think DVDs sometimes had upcoming (at time of release) ones.

While I always prefer subtitles, including for the language the audio is in, dubbing when done well is a proper artform. It's like 4D poetry.
