    Just explained to kid that in the 90s if you wanted to see some trailers to know if any upcoming movies seemed cool, you had to go watch a movie.

      On "Lateral" there was the question why so many people bought tickets for "Meet Joe Black", but left when the movie started.

      .

      .

      .

      It was because that movie premiered the long-awaited trailer for the first Star Wars prequel, so people went just for that.

      @clacke Hahaha. That's true.

      Of course, I'm really old. I'm just old enough to have caught the tail end of the newsreel era. (in black and white, of course.)

      @clacke Scary old guy here. Yeah, newsreels went out in the late 1950s as television news gained traction.

      @unixsmurf Then it would have old trailers for movies you would buy or rent. I meant for current and upcoming movies in the cinema.

      Hmm, maybe I have false memories. I agree that was the norm on VHS, but I think DVDs sometimes had upcoming (at time of release) ones.

      @unixsmurf I wouldn't know, I would generally buy DVDs years after the fact, when they were in the 5 EUR basket at the hypermarket.
