@WrenArcher@MariaLiv I used to work with Andy. He was writing the blog posts that ultimately became "The Martian" while we worked together, and some of our lunchtime chats are baked into that story.
I read "The Egg" at work while he was sitting at the next desk over, and had the pleasure to tell him it was the most beautiful work I'd read. Andy being Andy, he smiled and demurred by explaining it was just an experiment in writing in the second person.
@epilanthanomai I'm indeed talking about just that, particularly the part where some useful tool, often written in Python, is incompatible with the standard Python libraries on my distro, so I then have to fix that, but I'm not supposed to update my *system's* Python packages but make a virtual environment for the tool to live in, and each tool needs its own solipsistic and incompatible world.
Golang and Rust are vaguely better since they're compiled, at the cost of statically linked binaries.
The single most galling moment for me in working on various "modern" languages is actually at the moment of install when I realize they're asking me to intentionally throw the idea of my machine running a curated distribution out the window.
@darnell I feel you, and thank you for letting me emotionally dump at you a little. I'm somewhat scared now, even if I know I can keep my head down a bit and be ok. You've always been a trusted source on Mastodon.
@darnell I'm trans. I have friends who are trans veterans. I've seen a lot of this firsthand. I also promise you this will leave a national culture-wide stain where people like me will now be "proven" to be corrupting influences to be controlled or worse. The case has been made now...the "good Mormon boy from a good MAGA family" fell to the corruption of LGBTQ+ "ideology". This will never be seen otherwise.
@darnell Well, now merely being trans will be considered a corrupting influence on "normal" people, so there goes my hope for a free and happy life in this country.
@tess It'll probably be a few months. I promised myself no new games until I finish the main quests for Hello Kitty Island Adventure, and there's a game on deck after that. But metroidvania games play well on the exercise bike; that's where I played 90% of my Dead Cells time.
@davidhmccoy@flargh@NanoRaptor I can drink tacky and I am definitely not a snob... I'm actually a snob at the idea of being a snob. Brightly colored alcopops for everyone! Jarritos actually has some beautiful hard refrescos. That said, I tried a Twisted Tea for the first time in my life last summer, and something in it was just pain-inducing. I think it might be like something people have with cilantro. But please...you can have an extra one for me.
@gendercensus to say that "Ms." descends from "Magister" elides the history of "Ms." so fully that we might as already say that "Mx." does as well. In fact, the construction of "Mx." and its associated confrontational pronunciation mirrors the adoption of "Ms." in nearly every way.
@Satsuma@gendercensus in the US, my understanding is that magistrate is a class of judge, and so "Your Honor" and "Judge" are correct address for them.
@aral@martinmuc I *can* see the link isn't verified, and to boot, that bot pinged me like 15 minutes after I read your warning. Thanks for already reporting it, I'd just wanted you to have the reference on case you didn't already.
Signs & Codes Founder. I talk a lot about #ttrpg and especially #WorldOfDarkness (#WoD), #ham #radio, #edm, #retrocomputers, and all sorts of #foss stuff, especially systems software.I'm #trans, #nonbinary, #transfeminine, #polyamorous, #kinky, and polymorphously #queer.
