@operationpuppet I mean, I have some grace, and it's fine to use a tool you're being told to use. But you can't confront an LLM and its apologies have no value, you know?
At work, someone used AI tools to figure out why something didn't work as he expected on the project. It told him he needed some kernel config options changed and asked for my help. I researched them and quickly concluded they didn't exist.
What happened? The AI was giving configs for Zephyr, not Linux.
I told my colleague. He later let me know he "confronted" the AI about it and that it "apologized".
@momo You're not the only one to mention this, and indeed, I can still recall my grandparents' phone number but don't know the phone for one of my partners.
I do wonder how many people really had that many phone numbers memorized, though. There were a lot of pen-and-paper solutions.
@sbszine@superflippy thanks for explaining! I reckon we all deal with anxiety in different ways; the pandemic cost me my roller derby league so I pushed myself to learn how to DJ.
@superflippy I didn't know the lockdowns caused people to stop reading books. I'd actually have assumed the opposite would happen. Can you go into more detail?
Watching a video today on AI brain rot really helped cement for me what it is...a steady drop in practiced skills we take for granted. If you don't occasionally write emails, you get worse at it. if you don't do deep reading for yourself, you get worse at it. If you don't keep drawing or coding or composing, you get worse at them. Then the day comes when you need the skill, or something related to the skill, but you're too rusty to be effective. And critical thinking? Oh, that's a skill.
@stephanie@LilahTovMoon granted, Canada is a name for the region overall so they could keep it. But I think we can agree that they'd probably use the chance to switch to a "more French Canadian" heritage name.
@johnhattan love the name! I'm CB DeShill of Atlanta Roller Derby. And while we're doing funny names, since my Church name isn't on my profile, I'm Rev. Couchsloth.
@johnhattan Oh, Rudy Schwartz. You know, when I'm reffing roller derby, if attitudes start running hot on the track, we'll shake it off by saying "An orange is nothing but a juicy pumpkin."
@Chinchillidon oh, yeah. It's gonna be a holy shit show. I'll be tuning in for Kruk and Kuyp, because they're two creatures the likes of which we will never see again.
@CartyBoston@mekkaokereke I think it's also a factor of the ol' 80/20 power distribution that happens through typical forms of habit and inertia, plus the design choices of apps and tools. For example, I recently had to set up my own copy of Postiz because it's set up to treat Mastodon as a monolithic service, so it can only work with a single instance. Of course the Postiz hosted solution is configured for mastodon.social...
