I really appreciate what #pixelfed is doing for growing the #fediverse but the lead dev starting some petty beef with #mastodon and publicly proclaiming himself to be a “genius” for obfuscating server selection in signup is straight up toxic crap we do not need.

#Bluesky is really popping off since Musk’s latest bigotry. It’s far from perfect but at least they seem dedicated to open standards & protocols.

Not touching #Facebook for a long time and looking at it later is morbidly fascinating. If you don’t engage with anything over time the algorithm doesn’t have data and starts feeding you increasingly generic stuff it would show to any user it doesn’t have data for. My timeline is now filled with sports and celebs, neither of which are of the slightest interest.

Starve the algorithm and it becomes powerless. It becomes like Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods. #terrypratchett #socialmedia

Seeing a lot of buzz about how the #fediverse is losing users (almost always based on #mastodon numbers) as they drift to things like Threads and Bluesky. Anecdotally I’ve noticed a drop in “engagement”, but I’m not really phased.

This is the weird kids table in the school cafeteria, with the D&D club and goths. We were never going to be the “big thing”, and that’s good.

Stay weird, stay small, stay human.

Another #throwbackthursday! The first type of puppet I sold was my tribute to Fraggles, which I call Greeblees. In 2020 I did a new “deluxe” version of them, and this was the first. Today’s Greeblees are still based on this first build! #puppets #puppetbuilding

Come the new year one of my plans is to really engage with the #Fediverse. There will be an @owncast channel, more integration & activity on my Wordpress site, and Fediverse-exclusive content.

I'm forced to be on corporate socials to drive sales, but I'm here because I want to connect with people, not algorithms. That's something worth cultivating.
