"Stereotype" is a printer's term. Moveable type is expensive. You don't want to keep it tied up longer than needed, so you make a mould from the set type and cast a plate from that.

The "stereotype" is the mould.

A "cliché" is what the French called plate made from that mould, it's onomatopoeia from the sound of removing the plate from the mould.

"Boilerplate" is widely repeated text from the round stereotype castings of newspaper columns ready to throw on a drum press.

@thomasfuchs People do move, but outside of a region probably less often. And then many people will retain some degree of continued self-association with the previous area, reducing the "move server" pressure.

I'm from NYC but have been living in California nearly half my life. Still I read email and Usenet via a NYC ISP.

@thomasfuchs Geographical instances seem to be the best non-special interest solution. There's a huge amount in everyone's life that is regional from weather to local politics, so if you lack any predisposition to some topical server, that's a good choice.

I went with a Mastodon. Host personal server before I learned about the good regional one here.

@fere @thomasfuchs IMHO Fahrenheit is great for weather and terrible for most other uses. 0°C is not bad, 0°F is cold (-18°C). 100°C is impossible weather, 100°F is pretty hot (38°C).

@thomasfuchs My last long term position in an office (several years pre-covid), I could get a company paid parking spot or a monthly "commuter check" which was only redeemable at certain local transit for fare cards.

Driving to work took me about half an hour. Bike plus BART maybe 45 minutes. Pure public transit (three agencies) an hour. Oh, and driving home was consistently slower, with a toll, than driving in.

Not sure of my point other than pay-by-time is complicated
