Must watch documentary on Netflix:
Some of us in tech have been saying this for 20+ years, way before Apple removed the headphone jack, which was clearly to force people to move to airpods.
#RightToRepair feels like a forever losing battle.

https://floss.fund/ (by Zerodha in India) is offering $1 million per year grant to open-source projects. But very few applications have been received so far, and it needs help spreading the word.

Tech VCs love to complain against EU's cookie banners, but I don't hear them complaining about this obnoxious popup from Mac OS' gatekeeper:
@iron_bug I don't understand what you are trying to say.
Takahe supports multiple domains per instance: https://github.com/jointakahe/takahe but Mastodon still does not.
It's time #Mastodon supported multiple domain names per instance, allowing the users to use their own domain name for identity.
The issue has been open for 7+ years now: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/2668
@harold I just posted this thread on the flaws I see with the #BlueskyATProtocol architecture:
- Data format is decided by the app so I can be held hostage by the apps.
- Despite using my own domain for identity, to share a #Bluesky thread elsewhere, I still am forced to use a bsky dot app URL, making them a permanent intermediary between me and my audience.
- Big relays have incentive to blacklist small PDS hosts. It is SMTP/XMPP all over again.

@HauntedOwlbear @openrisk Why do you need 3 separate AP servers though? AP apps are now starting to support multiple object types like <Article> instead of only <Note>, but this was never a protocol limitation.
@anant AFAICT, both have serious issues. Seems like protocols are designed to give an illusion of decentralization and trap the users all over again. Like Zion in The Matrix.
How is AT / #Bluesky different from #ActivityPub : https://bsky.app/profile/danabra.mov/post/3l7oxg72zd22t

AT browser: https://atproto-browser.vercel.app/ lets you browse the AT data, independently of the app. Example: https://atproto-browser.vercel.app/at/danabra.mov

It's clear what #Mozilla leadership was actually paid for.
@darth @BeAware AP = ActivityPub protocol which was standardized by W3C and powers all fediverse apps interoperating with each other.
Feels more and more that all the so-called friends of #foss have fallen:
#Google , #Mozilla , #Canonical , #Microsoft , #GitHub , #Mastodon , #RedHat ... the list goes on.
Who is really left? #Linux #Debian #postgresql ?
@darth They've been holding #Fediverse back by not implementing interoperability standards. Been seeing too many instances of it. They come across as another wannabe-twitter kind of organization.
@BeAware Whalebird goes to great lengths to enable Slack-like UI. But it's available only for desktop, not the Web.
@BeAware No worries. I did not know about the advanced web mode at all, so that's a great discovery.
Also, I now think this can be accomplished only by modifying client apps. Servers don't need a change. Just need a way to show followed hashtags in the sidebar or somewhere easy to find.
@BeAware Is this what you meant?
It's great but it doesn't show a list of those hashtags. It just mixes the posts from those hashtags into a single timeline.
I guess I can have separate timeline for each hashtag. But what I am trying to accomplish is how Slack looks.
Is there an #ActivityPub server that allows users to add hashtags/topics to lists? Here is the feature request in #Mastodon repo: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/7692
I am interested in building a Slack-like interface with a list of hashtags/topics being pinned to the sidebar. if not Mastodon, would have to pick a different server.
Happy Independence Day! The 🇮🇳 #India project continues.
