Decided to dump my AI-generated avatar picture (from the early days before AI slop was obviously ruining *everything*) and gone back to the cartoon, drawn by a human hand in some sketchnotes for a talk I did years ago. I wish I could remember who drew it :(
Just managed to fight back against my worst instincts and NOT push a @manyfold release on a Friday afternoon. Friday morning I might have done, but the kids will be home in 10 minutes, so it feels like a bad idea ๐
>We will not be discouraged in our fight against far-right ideologies. They are currently on the rise in many parts of the world, and we believe it is important to protect all kinds of marginalized groups. However, if you believe this does not affect your project, you are wrong. Far-right forces pose a threat to all of us.
So so lovely to meet lots of the #SocialWeb/#ActivityPub dev community in person at #FOSDEM. As @andypiper said, building the #Fediverse is a team effort and if we work together, we absolutely can do this. And we *must*. โค๏ธ
I'm off to #FOSDEM2025 at the end of this week to join the #SocialWeb devroom, and talk about @manyfold on Saturday afternoon!
Looking forward to talking to folks about #ActivityPub federation, #3dPrinting, #WebGL... pretty much anything TBH! And looking forward to a trip on the Eurostar, too ๐
AI grift stocks collapsing simply because someone did the thing more cheaply just goes to show how much of a house of cards it was. Nothing but a hype balloon, and as soon as someone punctures it, the entire industry is flying round the room making farting noises.
@malcircuit I hate when people make that argument. OK, fine, maybe humanity has been through worse before, but it *was not a nice process* for those involved. Because we've survived before doesn't make it a good idea.
@jonty it blows my mind that someone sells a device that sticks onto the windscreen, and people plug it into their car's CANbus and let it drive them around.
10,000 users on the roads, and a disclaimer that says "THIS IS ALPHA QUALITY SOFTWARE FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY. THIS IS NOT A PRODUCT. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLYING WITH LOCAL LAWS AND REGULATIONS. NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED."
I'm beginning to think humans were a mistake, let alone computers.
It's *utterly* meaningless; not a single mention of any actual *need*, or *how* any of this will help people. And the section on public sector data proves to me that the person that wrote it has never ever been near any public sector data problem.
Pure magical thinking, techwash handwaving and shiny buzzword-based money grabbing. Ignore it and move on.
For one thing I really want to know more about this National Data Library. Where is it? How do I check a data out? Do I need to go in and get a little plastic card? Are the data points just sat there on shelves or is there some kind of index card system? Do I have to shush?
