i like the 67 meme a lot. it is joyous and affirmative. i do the gesture every time i say, hear, or see the number.

@georgia everything in our fallen creation is taken in the end by death and decay. it goes to the dust, it is frittered away like a garment. you and i both shall die, and in the meantime our finitude leads us to be judged corrupt, weak, vulnerable, and vain. our condition is the negation of the invincible and eternal. this negation is negated, not rescinded, when the eternal and invincible goes to the Cross, so that everything taken by death is transfigured by love.

@georgia i don't totally know how to translate this into the language of impassibility and simplicity. people have different definitions of impassibility and i do not reliably understand them
God suffers and dies because he gives everything he has and is to his Son, who takes on mortal flesh with all its blood and nerves and nociceptors, and suffers and dies. God in the abstract doesn't have, like, distinct suffering parts. he is not a being among beings. but he has them because we do

@georgia this is not the position of christianity inherently, but it is a position that comes out of christianity. i think the view of how God relates to creation is quite different in other religions and generates other conclusions, which i am very interested in preserving because i believe strongly in multiplicity for reasons that are compatible with the view i hold in the first place; nevertheless, within that multiplicity this is my view

@georgia i became and remain a Christian because of theopaschism. i believe in the God who empties himself completely and forfeits his own being for the sake of love. that emptying and forfeiting is who he is and he can do no other. he leads me to live in the Spirit so i can see what he is always doing in Christ: taking on our flesh, in its mortality, and rendering our vulnerability and death inseparable from the love which created the world

@georgia but the most common Christian view throughout history is that God is impassible, and that Christ's suffering is only according to his human nature

@georgia there are Christians who do exactly this and claim that it is by God's subjection of himself to suffering in Christ that people's lives can no longer be divided from each other or from the life of God, such that only love is viable

@georgia my favourite is chaucer without modern spellings but with interlinear cues, but that is slow as heck to read so i respect modernized spelling

i love secular pluralism and think it is wonderful to have societies which can neutrally accommodate religious differences, including non-belief, and i am perpetually unhappy about my province pretending to become "more secular" by instituting anti-religious policies which unsurprisingly are unevenly applied.

@luce-anon @lizzie there are programmed quakers who do things like communion or even baptismโactually there are a lot of themโbut the traditional quaker argument is that, for the soul who is open to the Holy Spirit, all the outward signs of creation can be full of God's inward grace, and to one who is not like this, no ritual has any effect and Jesus did not intend to institute rote ordinances of this kind

@georgia man this passage trolled me. it's like if i was reading a fable about a fox and a rabbit and it gets resolved by the rabbit pulling out a gun "because rabbits always have guns"

@luce-anon @kon it's worth noting that ever since the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, the Catholic Church and mainstream Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, and Reformed have all agreed on what used to be the dispute over sola fide/sola gratia/etc.

@luce-anon i've somehow looped around from this to whatever the opposite of this is. all i understand my religion to be is faith in the gracious gospel of Jesus Christ...
but i do say the Hail Mary in Latin every day, and i like to sing the Angelus, and i will prostrate myself before the Roman Catholic Eucharist and i will pray in front of states of St. Francis or Mary or the Jesus with his Sacred Heart...
but i consider myself to do all of this in an entirely Protestant manner
