@luce-anon @lizzie there are programmed quakers who do things like communion or even baptism—actually there are a lot of them—but the traditional quaker argument is that, for the soul who is open to the Holy Spirit, all the outward signs of creation can be full of God's inward grace, and to one who is not like this, no ritual has any effect and Jesus did not intend to institute rote ordinances of this kind

@georgia @lizzie @luce-anon @lillian I like having sacraments, but tbh I think the Moravians have a more healthy approach then we Anglicans do. Moravians not only make it way easier to get into seminary, but also have diaconal sacramental authority, so *every* parish can have communion on Sunday and you don't have the really unfair dichotomy of "wealthy urban parish with daily mass given by a 35 year old priest" and "poor as shit rural parish with 1 mass a year given by some 80 year old guy who has to be woke up by the deacon several times during the service". georgia likes this. -

@georgia @lillian @lizzie @luce-anon Diaconal authority over the sacraments also drives home the point that diaconal ministry is just as important as priestly ministry and a deacon isn't just "that guy who was too stupid to be a priest and now has to spend his time taking care of old people instead of doing something that matters to the church, what a loser". georgia likes this. -

@georgia @lizzie @lillian I totally get why someone would be quaker, but I just love the sacraments so much. The idea of God becoming tangible to us and meeting us through physical means really means a lot to me. georgia likes this.
