Pretty serious news here in #Vermont: the VT Department of Health is “strongly recommending people in towns at high risk for [EEE] avoid spending time outdoors as much as possible between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. to avoid mosquitoes that could carry the virus.”
High-risk towns currently include Alburgh, Burlington, Colchester and Swanton. Sudbury, our neighboring town, is at moderate risk.
The warning is in effect until the first hard frost.
@ntnsndr Happy to help. I figure if we can do one meeting to at least elaborate on the scope of the problem and propose some solutions it would be a good first step.
Assuming no one else wants to facilitate the first meeting, to ensure this does not fall through the cracks, if you are interested in this endeavor please respond directly to me with your availability for a 1 hour meeting in September using the social.coop Matrix video chat. Thanks!
Being the lead would be difficult for me at this time. However, I am happy to be supportive of the effort and join it.
That said, if no one is willing to step up, I would be happy to facilitate the first meeting just so we can get the discussion going and discuss who will lead it.
My most consistently used #ios Mastodon app has been #Tusker. What I love about this app is how straightforward it is. It is efficient, works quickly and well, and the developer is really dedicated to the idea of digital wellness, keep things like reblog and favorite counts off of your timeline.
I bring this up because the most recent TestFlight beta includes push notifications and they’re done quite well. It really adds another feather in Tusker’s cap.
I can barely explain what I experienced during totality. It was far more emotional that I realized to stand in the shadow of the moon and stare up like that, looking at the sun. I wandered around in a daze, looking at everything.
Afterwards I felt hungover, confused. I still do.
I’ve read about how people say total solar eclipses are life altering. I never knew why.
I looked into the heart of the sun. I saw a 360 degree sunset. I saw the mountains of the moon. I saw stars during the day and Venus shining beside the sun and the moon.
A few moments before totality everything got still. The mourning doves and insects went quiet. The light wasn’t like a sunset, it didn’t have that angle to it. It was just grey and ghostly. The high clouds made the light very white and grey, making you feel like you were in a shadow world. #Eclipse#Vermont#Eclipse2024 1/2
@ntnsndr I like this idea in theory. I often forget to check Loomio, and it would be nice to keep track of governance issues here.
I think the main impediment to this would be the fact that Mastodon doesn’t do threaded discussions well. I feel like it would be unwieldy to keep up with a particular discussion that we may be interested in.
I’m open to it, though, and would love to see a proof of concept.
Another thought: is there any way to do a Loomio/Mastodon connection through RSS?
@ntnsndr Very good thread. Back when I was teaching business ethics we always talked about the hockey stick growth mentality of VCs and the ethics of it.
I’ve felt for a long time that there are so many good ideas—and so many jobs—that have been killed because investors weren’t seeing their 10x or 100x return. Small, niche products and services are important, not just whatever idea catches fire.
Problem is access to capital, of course. We need ethical structures but also ethical investing.
@protean Interesting read. What troubles me about this is that it seems like it’s not something that can be controlled for and needs to be addressed in the codebase. Getting engagement shouldn’t kill your instance. As for social.coop, I don’t like the idea of us splitting up. I do wonder about us scaling up though, and what the costs of that would be.
