@aral @joynewacc I once got a DM from someone through matrix who was claiming to be from there, I didn't believe them so I led them to my site to see what IP connected in my site's logs, and lo and behold the IP was actually in Gaza. Showed me, I guess. Or perhaps they just have a VPN sat there, who knows -

@libreleah yeah, our immigration system is entirely screwed, like you said we need to just entirely strip it and start over (really like a lot of our bureaucratic systems).
I'm glad that you brought up the recent digital ID stuff also, as I have strong feelings against it. I will be promptly disposing of all my devices that could possibly run it (I assume it'll be mobile based), I hope that's enough to at least resist it for some time, civil disobedience if you will.
I don't buy the claim that it is to reduce illegal immigration, mostly because I don't believe in the semantics of that claim (that's an entirely different rabbit hole though), I feel that claim was made to pander to groups that don't currently see Keir favourably. I believe that it is simply another attempt by "elite" political forces to surveil the citizens, although I have no doubts that there are high up monetary incentives for those who came up with it as well.
Anyway, safe to say that I'll be resisting digital ID as much as possible. -

@libreleah my question with all of this is - what's really stopping us all just getting along? Not in terms of this event, but rather the left / right divide in general. In fact, I actually despise the terms "left" and "right", as it certainly makes people think like they're picking a team/side to support and that the other side is the sole enemy, I don't label myself as either one. -

@libreleah yeah very good point, it's a really unfortunate reality about basically all online services today. They'll either censor what you can do/say, or they'll sell every single data point they can gather about you, but most likely they'll do both. Even if their entire pitch is "to give you privacy/security" like a VPN provider.
That's why I've started to make an effort to try and ensure that everything I use is self-hosted/self-owned, at the very least so that I know I have control over all of it, and I'd encourage anyone else to do the same. -

@libreleah I certainly also recommend people to get their own VPS (I use Vultr) and to set up Wireguard, that's what I'm currently doing atm and it works great. I'm not sure if it has a residential IP (probably likely not) but I've found that I've actually been captcha'd less while running it than just from my home IP. I think especially since we're starting to see more legislation around online censorship, having a VPN set up this way is a must for basically everyone.
