@goatsarah I rely heavily on mine. Apart from anything else, the mobile reception here is pants (new town, so no masts until "enough population", whatever that entails), so if I didn't have some sort of land line it'd be an exercise in pure frustration.

@goatsarah I cannot count how many conversations I have had with my elderly mother about this one. Yes, VOIP behaves just like a regular land line (and indeed I've had one for a while now). No, just because it's connected to the Internet, that doesn't mean you can look at websites on it. No, you do not have to worry about anything. Rinse and repeat.

She's basically got all her marbles, but she's 85 and her memory is tanked.

I blame the fact that I was in a class of 40 children at primary school, and because I could just whizz through everything I wasn't given any attention - that went to those who were deemed to need it. But I needed it too, just for different reasons.

@goatsarah Depends who you're talking to. My ex-lodger could not get subtlety at all. One time he got fined for speeding and spent ages privilege-waffling about how the law basically shouldn't have applied to him.

I tried all the subtle techniques I could think of, and was eventually reduced to saying: "Just shut up."

He did.

@Mrfunkedude Make sure there's something nice in your feed to help balance all the doom and gloom. I find I get plenty of cats, and they help. I've also started following @benoitmandelbot , a bot that does nothing but create pretty fractals.

@Dora @david Depends which instance you're on. My instance has a very handy instant translator which works surprisingly well - useful because I know people who post in Ukrainian, Dutch, German, Yiddish, and Italian, and only in the last two languages do I stand any chance at all.
