     @goatsarah To be fair, the "doesn't work during a power outage" concern is a valid one. It's why I always used to have a wired handset on my landline (which I never used other than for emergencies)

     @goatsarah I cannot count how many conversations I have had with my elderly mother about this one. Yes, VOIP behaves just like a regular land line (and indeed I've had one for a while now). No, just because it's connected to the Internet, that doesn't mean you can look at websites on it. No, you do not have to worry about anything. Rinse and repeat.

     She's basically got all her marbles, but she's 85 and her memory is tanked.

     @mongoose I could see how they would be a concern in the UK. Every time I go back there, the lamentable state of the mobile networks surprises me every time.

     @goatsarah I rely heavily on mine. Apart from anything else, the mobile reception here is pants (new town, so no masts until "enough population", whatever that entails), so if I didn't have some sort of land line it'd be an exercise in pure frustration.
