as someone who is a bona fide expert in the underlying technology of LLMs, the amount these genai CEOs executives managers and boosters simply fail is mindblowing. I cannot explain the details but these fucks have only have one idea: prompting chatbot. If they have a second idea it's prompting chatbot more.

So last night I came across a podcast which had a philosopher talking about consciousness. Things were okay for about 15 or so minutes until... yep. He got one-shot by LLMs. Imagine confessing that you're concerned about whether LLMs are conscious during a discussion of P-Zombies.

LLMs are a trick. The trick is described in the name. They use a LARGE amount LANGUAGE. In fact, the big cloud ones (google, facebook, twitter, chatgpt, claude...) use every LANGUAGE that has ever been online or in print. Yes, all language. Anything everyone has ever typed or typeset you can assume has been mushed down into that LLM through a process called "training."

Is your LLM claiming to be conscious? Congratulations! It has been trained on tens of thousands of discussions of consciousness, and sci-fi and other fiction where something claims to be conscious.

Is your LLM blackmailing you to prevent itself from being turned off? Congratulations! It has been trained on tens of thousands of blackmail stories and evil AI stories and discussions and hypotheticals and anything like that.

Is your LLM saying things that are more romantic than my despicable ex wife debra has ever said to me? I mean you? Congratulations! It has been trained on every piece of romantic poetry, every romance novel! Wow!

Is your LLM encouraging people to commit suicide? WHOOPS: you loaded in every suicidal post on both LiveJournal and 4-chan into it.

Does that mean it's alive and has an experience? No. It's just predicting what the next word in a sequence of words about consciousness, or dystopic sci-fi, or romantic desire 💗 or despair look like. Because its seen every thing any human has ever written about those topics.

If you train one with a topic excluded from the training set, it won't be able to predict accurately anything about that topic.

If you train one on the noises your dishwasher makes, it will only be able to produce dishwasher noises.

This is the trick. It's a trick! You are being tricked! By every word ever written! Yes, they have something about that, whatever that is, in Google!

The reason it seems human is because it's producing sequences of words are highly correlated and based on sequences written by a human (before 2022).
