@youronlyone I feel like Ubuntu is now a "base distro derived from Debian", mainly because "base distro based on Debian" sounds weird

I feel like it stopped being a "flavor" when the project got so large and started to push in a different ideological direction. The recent controversy over Snaps also reinforces that Ubuntu has done much more than just customize a DE and select certain packages, Canonical wants it to approach Linux management in a very specific way.

This leaves room for Kubuntu, Edubuntu, etc to be flavors of Ubuntu, which they certainly are.

But, this is all splitting hairs. Any interpretation is correct if the user understands it! :linux:

@youronlyone you described “flavor” exactly how I’ve seen the usage over my 20 years of Linux.

Flavor, to me, was a combination of the DE and the pre-installed package set. And different flavors were all part of one base distro (this reminds me that Debian, Red Hat, Slack were “base distros”for a time). Even Ubuntu was a flavor of Debian at the start, but quickly grew out from that to probably be its own base distro.

@mattblaze @jimvernon @benjamincodes you could save a lot of words with this argument by just saying “don’t use mastodon for private discussions”, which, of course, should extend to *any and all social networks*

Every time I see this argument it starts with the straw-man of Twitter DMs and pastes it on top of Mastodon, without acknowledging any of the efforts already made to mitigate the problem. So then every thread devolves into the same discussion where the straw-man is picked apart.

@gbhnews Is there any network-wide movement for #PBS? I assume you’re all independent but wondering if there is any urgency among other affiliates to setup a presence on the #fediverse.

Curious if the #media misunderstanding the point of #mastodon will ever end? We’re 8-9 months since the beginning of the bigger migration waves and I’m still constantly seeing “will mastodon ever succeed? Why is mastodon failing?”

We’re watching the media, in real time, have zero idea how to evaluate something unrelated to capitalism. Have we lost all ability to measure something without a quarterly report?

I want to start to organize these and make an effort to refute. Using something like #MisunderstandingMastodon is way too long and sounds like trying to make fetch happen but I like it.

@Radical_EgoCom at this point i'm not shocked, not even entertained, i'm just bored at their idiocy

This isn’t even interesting or evocative in any way. It's just screaming to the heavens how stupid elected leaders can be.

@welshpixie thank you greatly for the write-up. I’ve been trying to watch from the outside and grok what all was happening and being a little lost.

But thank you even *more* for linking the receipts. This is what goes missing all too easily and quickly.

@anildash @thomasfuchs I check out of the argument at “mastodon was designed to make social interactions harder”. This is wholly inaccurate and just shared in bad faith. I’m getting tired of people spending so much effort on this platform just to shit on it and advertise others.

Mastodon is designed to allow me to choose who I interact with. Not getting replies from a server I don’t federate with is a feature, not a bug.

The “quote toot” thing is just a tired argument. Yes - the first decade of the place, the authors didn’t want it, and they had their reasons (and I defend them, even though I want quote-toots). BUT, welcome to the open web, where there are now clients with quote-toots, so this is now an outdated view. And, even now, Eugene has said that he’s changing his mind on it.
