1. A standing dead tree by the side of the brook has eleven plate-shaped shelf mushrooms growing straight out from the bark from all sides of the tree. Each mushroom is reddish and aged brown in lots of spots. They range from 5-10 inches. 10 of them have recently fallen snow on top, nearly covering their entire caps. The 11th, is directly below one of the others so no snow was able to accumulate. There is a tangle of greenish-yellow moss at the base of the tree. The ground is covered in snow. The background is blurry to call attention to the fungi.

1. A brook in the woods divides the photo as leaf covered banks and trees line both sides. Ice has formed on top of the brook and is reflecting back sun that is streaming through the trees from the upper right. The sun is also casting long trees shadows on the ice. Rocks sit in the brook surrounded by ice some of them spotted with lichen and moss. Many of the trees are hemlocks so there is a greenish hue being highlighted by the sunlight.

1. Twelve second video of a wooded trail at night taken by a trailcam. A large bear slowly emerges from the woods on the right of the trail and lumbers directly across the length of the camera view. When it reaches the far left, a second bear, seen in the corner and more of a blue appears and they both disappear out of camera view.

1. Looking at a brook in the woods. In the foreground is a large dead tree that has been snapped over creating an L shape. Where the breakage happened there are whirls of twisted bark, like a knee joint. Much of the remaining bark on the trees is covered in bright green moss and lichen. Beyond the tree is a winding brook zigzagging its way to a waterfall that can barely be made in the distance. The brook is shallow and has to route itself around stones. This is a rare area of the forest where there are an equal amount of deciduous trees as there are hemlocks and pines. The lack of leaves in winter gives a pretty clear view straight back to the waterfall where other times of the year it would be hidden.

1. Toward the upper right, the morning sun is coming up behind lots of hemlocks and pines in the forest. A lead covered trail leads off into the woods. There is a considerable amount of fog coming off the brook which creates a sunbeam effect. Small green plants line the trail.

1. Early morning in the forest. Tall hemlocks grow on a leaf scattered incline, some of their lichen covered branches having fell off. Near some of their bases are moss and exposed roots. A clump of hemlocks further up the hill can be seen in full and their green canopy is lit up like a bright fog by the sun penetrating their boughs.

1. 20 second video taken just as the sun has come up of a wooded trail lightly covered with snow as drizzle falls. As the video proceeds 7 large turkeys, feathers wet against their backs trudge through the leaves and over branches. A group of 3 is followed by a group of 4. The turkeys appear mostly black with lighter legs and reddish-white heads. They are in a line and seem intent to getting to their destination.

This leucistic Chickadee first visited me last fall. It stayed through the winter and left when spring arrived. I didn’t think I’d see it again.
But the little friend is back! And it perched on the seed bucket long enough for me to get a few photos.
