AES is vulnerable to quantum attack. Grover's Algorithm will work on it. This means that you will need double the key length in a post-quantum world. If you consider a 128-bit key satisfactory against non-quantum attack, you'll need to go to 256. 192 to 384, 256 to 512, etc.

@thomasfuchs AFAICT, vanishingly little of MacOS X (now macOS), probably not even a single line of code, came from original Unix. That doesn't seem like a "direct line" to me, but rather a meander all over the place.
Reminds me just a tiny bit of the widespread (but spurious) claims that QDOS/86DOS/MS-DOS/IBMDOS was built on code from CP/M. -

It's hard to imagine how it served as a survival benefit for the species.

Isn't it amazing how buffalo evolved wings nearly identical to those of chicken? Appaently it's a case of convergent evolution, similar to carcinization.

@freedosproject Spreadsheet programs not only predated Windows, they predated the IBM PC.

@dankwraith Ya gotta be careful. Unlike factory mass-produced software, the zeroes and ones in handmade software often have looser tolerance. Sometimes the ones are as little as as 0.7, and I've seen zeroes as large as 0.4, or occasionally even slightly negative.
Also, make sure the seller certifies that the bits in their software are ethically-sourced, cruelty-free bits. -

@thomasfuchs Unfortunate. I assume that there must be a Lisa lurking somewhere, since I see the keyboard and mouse.

It took me a while to realize that it was a widely propagated typo, but much of the AI being promoted now is actually "derp learning".

One of the TVs in this restaurant is apparently tuned to the SMPTE Bars channel. It's not very exciting, but I actually like it, perhaps because it doesn't insult my intelligence nearly as much as the other channels. I wonder how much I'd have to pay to subscribe.

@evacide Well, sure, but we want home-grown surveillance capitalism that can be used by our own police state, not imported surveillance capitalism that's used by a foreign police state.

@jarhill0 @foone If the code needs to know the endianness, it's guaranteed to be wrong-endian.
